Definitely was not expecting the ending on this one! I thought I had everything figured out and by the time the big twist was revealed, I was in shock! It just kept getting better!

An enjoyable read with a satisfying end, but I still feel conflicted. There were points towards the end especially where I wanted to just skip ahead because it got a bit repetitive. I have a hard time with thrillers that bring up neurodivergence and this is no exception. I don’t like how often they referred to the neurodivergent children as difficult.
It’s like okay Avery has adhd but unrelated she’s also a sociopath, however these two are often conflated. Also, she’s being held as a 9 year old in a locked basement where a woman plans to murder her!!! It doesn’t matter that it was her idea to run away, as an adult Marion should’ve said no. It’s still kidnapping!!!!! Idk it kinda pissed me off.

I love Shari Lapena’s work, despite every book following the same plot line over and over.
I didn’t see Avery hiding out in Marian’s basement, so that was a fun twist.
Everything else was fairly predictable, though it was a fun read. What WASNT fun was the ending. I can’t remember if Lapena has ended a book so abruptly before with no resolution. I was flipping through the pages looking for the next chapter, or maybe a sneak peek at the next book. So frustrating! I literally closed the book with a “wtf!” All in all, I enjoyed reading this one, but I wouldn’t recommend it compared to her others. She always follows the same tropes, so you know what to expect.

The vibe is very similar with Shari Lapena's other book, Someone We Know, which was exactly what i was looking for. It's in a small town/suburb, about a mystery involving adultery, conflict between neighbors, and problematic children.

I really enjoyed reading this, i finished it in 2 days (that's fast for me). It's such a page turner. The first 60% reads like the crime series that i love, Vera, where the competent police team did everything they can to investigate this case, and the layers were peeled one by one. Very satisfying. The latter half took a turn, which didn't surprised me completely but still made me gasp. Honestly it involved one of my least favorite trope
(psycho child)
, but it gets the story to another level of tense.
