Never thought a Cinderella re-telling would hook me this bad. The selfless Blue in this book must have resonated with some parts in me
I read this because a booktuber I liked highly recommended it, but I found it so bad and boring that it's unreadable. Reading this felt like a slog and borderline torture at times.
In a tiny, little, no bigger than a city kingdom there lives a witch. That sounds good, except why do you call it a kingdom when it is clearly a city? Also it is divided in 9 areas each ruled by a family of nobles. I would understand if you wanted the country to be divided in 9 and each noble has his own region, like the Borgias and the Sforzas and the Medicis used to have in Italy.
And everyone is scared of a baaad witch, imprisoned right at the edge of the town in a forest. She can roam wherever she wants in her neck of the woods, she just can't leave it. Why is she right next to people's houses like that?
Besides the lackluster world-building, the female MC is all "let's save the children by printing more money and giving it to them" type of person. And she has zero, negative even, chemistry with the male MC, who is a prince. She is a farmer/herbalist and it just so happens that her family are friends with the royal family. You know it always happens with royals, they're chumming it up with the peasants.
And the male MC is all "heavy is the crown and woe is me and my sister can't talk and I was a brat and put myself in danger so my father the king had to give his life to save mine and poor me but I will keep chasing that adrenaline because it makes me feel alive". Couldn't stand him.

I LOVE THIS RETELLING.
This retelling of Cinderella is so inventive and unique. Blue is a wonderful heroine, who can most definitely take care of herself. She is smart, kind, and strong-willed, her mission to help the young an impoverished borders on saintlike. Her grief and perseverance are accurate, raw, and real. Per the original story of Cinderella, Blue falls in love with the handsome Prince, but they were childhood friends long before they developed deep feelings for each other. Their love story happens organically, I saw their love grow until it blossomed in a spectacular way. The plot was reminiscent of the classic Cinderella tale, with the addition of fun magical twists, danger, and evil monsters.

What an interesting twist on Cinderella. Minus some issues with repetitive wordings, the story was so, so good. Cinderella + alchemy = winner.
This is one of my favorites - another 5 star read 🙂. If you haven't read this or any of C.J. Redwines books, you're missing out. You need to go check them out and read this book and all her books.
I love Blue and Kellan and the story is awesome. It was a hard book to put down - almost read it all in one night. Go read it now 🙂❤️!
