The narrators did a ok job but with so many characters some of the voice choices weren’t my favorite. The biggest issue was the story development. Maybe because it was a kindle vella story to start, but it seemed like the author was making changes to the story as they went. But after the story was compiled there wasn’t an effort to clean it up. My other is that’s clear the author wanted to use misdirection to leave the reader in suspense but it mostly just read and chaotic. As a concept the story has my interest but I’m not loving the execution. I’m willing to stick it out, but I’m hoping for a cleaner story with a clearer direction.

What a story. I’ve had this in my TBR forever, and I finally had some time and let me just say WOWWWWWWWWWWW!
I don’t even know where to begin or how to express how much I loved this book. The descriptions, the characters, the drama, the lore, everything was crafted so beautifully, giving a gorgeous,unique perspective on the whole “ magic school genre”…I’m just overwhelmed by the sheer magnificence of seeing US represented in a world where black characters are usually sidekicks or footnotes.
That being said, let’s dive in to this meaty story. I’m trying so hard not to spoil anything.
Our four sisters north, south, east, and west and our beloved Quan are absolutely amazing characters and I cannot get enough of them. I love Maggie as she slowly begins to realize who and what she is. I love Asha and her bold fearlessness. I love Souxie and her calm assured demeanor. And sweet isis. My girl.
I can’t wait to see what happens next. All in. Let’s go.

This book wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t particularly good either. I feel like it was a bit overhyped, and there wasn’t much depth to any of the characters. I did like the cat the most, though. I thought he had the best dialogue, but maybe it will get better in the second book.
