The Beggar King

Not my favorite of the three I've read but still a good read.

This is a gritty read - hard to stomach at times. I feel I ought to get that warning in first before I recommend it. But if you can bear the descriptions (e.g torture, war, sewage, quite a lot of sewage) then this is masterful storytelling. It did at times remind me of 24, with the number of near-death experiences. Kiefer Sutherland, eat your heart out.

I love this series, really I do -- but I think this might have been one of the weakest novels as a whole.

Yes, there were bright moments, but the overall pacing was too sluggish and I found my mind wandering more often than it ever has when reading books in this series.

Again, highly entertaining, but parts of this fell flat. The villains were predictable (I knew who the bad guys were as soon as they were introduced. These books are fun, but I was not not very impressed with this one.

I think I can say I liked this third book in the series more than the second. It still doesn't reach the level of the first book, but it's a fun read that's different from most of the historical mysteries out there. I was a little bothered that the female character is once again a victim to be rescued by male characters, although otherwise she's a fantastic character.

I have to say I enjoyed this one a lot better than the first two. The pacing has markedly improved. I didn't have any of those moments where I was thinking, "Why isn't this over yet?"

I love this series.

Another thrilling read!

Loved the new location and additional characters. It could be that I read too many of the series in a row but I felt like it was fairly easy to figure out who the villain was. Still it was quite entertaining. On to book 4...

Another nice installment

I like this one much more than the Dark Monk, I love that Magdalena features so highly, and that she spends so much of the book telling Simon where to go. Btw Simon is still my least favourite character. I am so over his pompousness.
