Wow, that was fantastic!

I went into this book with some idea of what to expect, based in the synopsis. I was pleasantly surprised to be way off the mark. This book went in directions I did not expect at all, and I loved every minute of it. I always have a soft spot for the guys who have had a rough past, and Brady and Cameron both have their fair share of traumas. When they first become linked, they were just trying to make the best out of an awkward situation, but after so much time in such close proximity their relationship develops into so much more. I loved how they shared their feelings and memories through their bond, and how Cameron was always trying to ease Brady's fears about The Faceless (who turned out to be a lot more rapey than I expected). It was unusually sweet and made me all gooey inside. I also really liked the originality of the plot line. It really did keep me guessing, especially the last third when Kai-Ren shows up, and it is not often that I can enjoy being surprised that way. This book was a wonderful surprise and I can't wait to read more!

Brady is a guy who just can't get a break. Everything that happens to him (and it mostly happens to him, without his input) goes to s*it really fast. He hates the space, hates that he's been conscripted and can't help his father take care of his younger sister. The reason he won't get training that would eventually lead him to an officer position (even though he's very capable) is because that would mean he'd have to spend 5 more years (together with the compulsory 10) in space. He is young and lonely and afraid, but used to nobody giving a crap about a recruit, a kid from a refugee camp. The anger gives him energy to keep pushing on.

Cam is... I didn't quite get a hold on Cam. He's a good guy who's been through some serious nightmare-inducing stuff. But even after all that happened to him, he still feels love for space and stars and piloting. He came to an understanding of what happened to him and why, and so was at relative peace with it.

Their love was intense. It would fall under the category of insta-love, but when you're in each other's thoughts and memories and emotions and dreams, when you're not even sure where your emotion begins and his ends, I'd say insta-love is the only possible result (that is if the guy in your had is not a total a*shole).

It was not quite clear to me what happened at the end -
Why did Kai Ren let them go? Why was it part of the deal for Cam to go back with Kai Ren as some kind of sacrifice? What happened with the "peace treaty" considering Cam and Brady were released?
, but I'm hoping those (and other) questions will be answered in the next installment.

I loved this book! The writing was excellent (the kind of writing where some parts were so beautiful they made me cry), the story and the characters captivating (I read it in a day, and I'm a very slow reader!) and I'm really looking forward to reading the next book.

It was a very emotional story with a satisfying ending. There is an unmentioned subplot which is about the Faceless. They’re overwhelming powerful and they seem to have walked away. I’m curious if they’ll return and in what capacity.

This is absolutely fantastic.
Brady might just be one of the best characters I've ever had to experience the story from. There was attitude, stupidity, witty banter, anger, so much anger and angst and heartbreak.
The plot was awesome and fast paced and heartbreaking.
The writing was just amazing.
Warning This story does have explicit scenes and trigger warning for sexual abuse.

3 Audio (Chris Chambers)

* Summary:  When Cameron, a pilot previously captured by aliens, suddenly returns to their space ship trapped in stasis, trainee medic Brady finds himself accidentally bound to the other man - literally acting as his cardiac pacemaker and general health supporter - despite concerns from everyone and his own issues.

* Stats: SciFi, M/M, open door with kink, first in a series but could be read alone.

* Notes:  The plot/concept was interesting, but the story seemed all over the place and I didn’t get the ending.  I also felt like the repeated and frequent use of slurs was gratuitous and an uncomfortable/weird/poor choice.  The characters were fine although the non-POV MMC seemed a bit lacking in background.  I did like the mild chaoticness of the POV MMC, but overall, wasn’t inspired to continue the series.  The narration was good.

OTT and Spoilery Content Notes:
Military mmc, conscription, child soldiers (16), alcohol, some “crazy” talk, gambling, kidnapping/mmc was taken prisoner of war, weapons, violence, mmc was drugged, presumed mutilation (scarring/tattooing), war, death, medical care, burns (some fatal, random people), tobacco, hospital scenes, illness/injury, blood, vomit, caretaking, bathing, resuscitation, rape/assault/beating (of MC, in the past, briefly referenced), homophobia (from side characters, also internalized, including a lot of slurs), telepathy, MCs share emotions, gay mmc/bi mmc, bisexual awakening, torture (presumed), extreme forced proximity, death of parent, parentification of mc (in past), restraint with chain/blindfolding (not kink), anal play/anal sex, SA/rape of mc (on page, in the past), nightmares, masturbation, a little bit of voyeur-y mutual masturbation, interrogation, gentle touch, ill parent/dying parent, industrial illness, general manhandling, child abuse (of mc, by stepparent), whiny dom, restraint with hands during sex, honour bondage, mmc starts oral sex while other mmc is asleep, virgin mmc, lube use, condom use, a fair bit of internalized homophobia, mmc is handcuffed, mmc has trafficked drugs, death of parent, suicidal ideation (and mentions of suicide), grief, power play, bondage, blindfolding, mmc is beaten, mmc is burned, mmc is medicated without his consent/awareness, 19M/somewhat older M

I loved this ❤️

I'm finding myself getting more and more into these gays in space stories lately - this was my favourite yet.

Brady was a great narrator for the story. I'm always a sucker for an MC who's still discovering their sexuality, and the author smashed it out the park with that side of it. I found him to be such a complex, interesting, well designed character.

Cameron too was brilliant. I so adored the mystery around him despite the fact that he was literally telepathically linked with Brady. That telepathy was genius, too. It added such an interesting twist to the book. I can't think of another time where a book has had 1 narrator, but you've been able to see inside both MC's heads.

The faceless were so creepy as well. I feel like there's a lot more to learn about them and I'm keen to get into the next book.

I loved the plot too, it was definitely on the darker side of sci-fi, but the romance moments balanced that out well. Easy 5 stars for this.

Absolutely loved the storyline of this book, it grabbed me very early on and I was captivated. The world building was done well, and I had enough information so I knew what was happening without drowning in Sci Fi tech talk. Loved the characters and what they were going through and how they bonded. Loved how their connection was handled. Everything was going great guns. There may have been a little too much repetition in the middle but it still worked at getting the message across and so I was ok with that. I had several moments where things moved me to tears, through grief and tenderness.
The whole way through this book I am thinking, 5 stars, 5 stars, and then the ending ... I am just a little confused. So much thought seemed to go into this book, and it was paced well throughout and then all of a sudden it skips ahead and everything is all neat and tidy. I felt robbed. This book deserved a better ending. Not necessarily in what happens but in how it is written, and it certainly needed more detail.
This could have been amazing, but sadly it failed me at the end.
It is definitely worth the read though!

Entertaining but darker than I had expected, especially the faceless communication. Iykyk.
