Highly enjoyable, just like the first one, but the adventure takes place much further from home and so Anya doesn't get to interact with her family as much. I was so drawn in to Babulya's theological comments and guidance in book one, that as exciting as this book was I found myself missing that aspect. However, it is exciting that several new mysteries have been alluded to for the continuation of the series!

I love the concept of these books, the world, and the family element. I really really want them to be favorites, yet with this one I found my mind wandering a lot. I was able to put it down and walk away for long periods of time rather than being engrossed. That's not a flaw necessarily-more of a mismatch of book and reader.

If you liked the first story, you will not be disappointed with this one! The characters are back from the last one and some new ones have joined them on an epic adventure.

SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!

This was a good book. I liked how we got to return to these characters, and how the end is set up for another but book to happen. I did NOT like, however, the romance. This book is middle grade, and was kinda meant to be about Anya getting her dad (not a spoiler, just what’s on the blurb). Instead, it focused a lot on the Misha\Anya dynamic, and whatever was going on with Ivan . For that, the rating is lower than it could be.

I was honestly really torn on this rating. Anya seems to have gotten a little brattier in this book which tracks because she is 13 now and I guess going through teenage mood swings. Still there were some legit heated arguments between friends that just seemed to be later pushed aside without really addressing them which might just be nitpicking on my part but felt significant while reading.

All that being said, the returning characters and the new characters that were introduced in this book are great. I love the representation in this book from Jewish Russian to deaf to LGBT characters, I feel like this book is so refreshing for a kid's fantasy book. The big bad is very cool and the story was just plain good. I'm definitely going to read the next one. (I gotta know what's happening in Istanbul)
