It's hard not to like a book about Dolly Parton. I listened to the audiobook so I didn't quite get the complete experience without the visuals or additional background info, but it was still nice to get her POV and hear her sing clips of the songs she's talking about. She is compassionate and understanding and a maverick at keeping her opinion to herself. I was most impressed about how she tries to give as many people credit in her success as possible including herself. She gracefully weaves her self-assuredness and humility together with ease. I was also endlessly amused and impressed at her ability to subtly self-promote. In addition to referring to every song as a favorite, she also plugged her perfume, her Netflix series, her current Broadway show, and a future Broadway show based on her life.

As a girl brought up in the South, Dolly Parton was someone whose name I was always aware of. I've never cared much for country music as a genre, so aside from her song Jolene, I knew little to nothing about her. I love the way each chapter is laid out with a brief introduction to what was going on in Dolly's life at the time with the rest of the chapter being told through her notable songs from the era and a blurb by Dolly explaining her inspiration and how she was feeling when she wrote each song. I highly recommend listening to the songs as you go if you're like me and might not be familiar with her music.

She is one of the most kind-hearted, bright, and hardworking people in the music industry- Taylor has nothing on her! With nearly 3,000 songs to her credit, many of them award-winning, I had no idea how prolific and gifted she is as an artist. After finishing this book I am coming away with my head full of earworms!

I love her personal stories which give deeper meaning and life to her songs. She has a special gift for using her music to explore a wide array of topics and life experiences which makes her music so relatable to so many. I was completely unaware of her acting career aside from a certain Disney show and I can't wait to check out some of her movies. (I know, I know, it's a travesty that I haven't seen Steel Magnolias- don't come for me. Lol)

Before reading this book I never understood why Dolly was so beloved, but I have come out the other side of this read as a convert. Her class for days and her heart of gold are much needed in this world and I hope she stays with us for many years to come. Dolly for President!

I've been reading this book a little bit at a time, and my admiration for Dolly Parton continues to grow.

When I was growing up, Dolly was mainly a joke. I mean, they call the bridge outside Memphis the Dolly Parton bridge. I do remember doing aerobics to "9 to 5." I really, really remember the immense popularity of "Islands in the Stream," but when I listened to country stations--and I tried to avoid them--they rarely played her songs.

I, like most of my generation, knew Dolly best for her role in Steel Magnolias. And later, when I got to college, for Dollywood.

Discovering more about Dolly has been a joy. To see how she's handled her business all while being an utter genius songwriter just gives me some hope for my native state of Tennessee. She has so quietly--and sometimes loudly--taken care of so many people through her gift that she is an inspiration.

Even better, I really relate to her ability to see the divine in those things and those people others deny. I respect her ability to pour herself into songs. It's simply a joy to share a home state with her, even if I am from the other side, and she is my inspiration to try to do well by others.

If you ever wondered why Dolly Parton is a national treasure this book will let you know. I'm not a country music fan, but you don't have to be to enjoy this. Parton tells the stories in this "narration" and they are wonderful. She discusses everything - song inspirations, her career, challenges she faced as a woman, family, colleagues with grace and humor.

Not exactly a memoir (although I've heard there is one; I need to go look for that!) This is a book about how/where/why she wrote a lot of her songs, and she has A LOT of songs. She gives glimpses into her personal life, but leaves so many questions unanswered that I'm more curious about her now than when I started this book!

The audiobook read by Ms Parton herself? Yes please. She's an incredible songteller, I enjoyed it from the first word to the last ❤️.
