In The Evolution of Caluprnia Tate the focus of the story was Callie Vee's relationship with her grandfather and her discovery of herself as she observed the natural world. It was a coming of age story. I feel like Callie Vee stalled in The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate. She still has a special relationship with her grandfather. She still has too many annoying brothers. And, she is still misunderstood by her parents. So, what was missing?

Same vibes as the first one, chill, the usual light drama, very comforting. I wasn’t sure if I had read this book before, even though I’ve known it existed for a long time, and I hadn’t but I really enjoyed it. Calpurnia still resists all efforts by her family to turn her into a proper young lady, and in this one she starts to earn and save her own money. Overall she becomes more mature and more confident in herself and she finds ways to get around her family to do things she wants to do and I’m glad to see it. She’s well on her way to busting up standards for women in the early 1900s and I’m sure she made a very good life for herself when she grew up.

So grateful to Blue Willow for the loan of the ARC. I loved the first Calpurnia Tate, and love this one as well. We get a more in depth look at the differing expectations between Callie and her brothers and see how Callie feels restricted by those expectations. Kelly's writing is rich and the characters carefully drawn. I think there will be a sequel to see what happens next in Callie's life. This book ended a little unexpectedly-- I felt that there should have been more, so hopefully that means another novel is in the works.
Any kid who likes nature, science, or historical fiction will enjoy this title with special interest for Texas kids.

This picks up Calpurnia Tate's life as she turns thirteen. She still learns science from her grandfather and runs around with her brother who loves to rescue animals.

Her life gets more interesting when her cousin comes to stay with the family following a devastating hurricane in Galveston (the subject of Erik Larson's [b:Isaac's Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History|239186|Isaac's Storm A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History|Erik Larson|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1403179592s/239186.jpg|1605]).

The plot didn't feel as rich as the plot in the first book in this series. Maybe it wasn't originally going to be a series, but only became one when the first book became such a hit.

All I know is that I wasn't as engaged as when I first met young Calpurnia. Too many moments in this book felt contrived.

I have a soft spot for Calpurnia Tate, a girl in 1900 Texas with a hankering for science and the natural world.

Oh I loved this book. What a great read...especially for younger readers. I just love so much about Calpurnia: the way she always tries to stand up for what's right, the way she looks at the world through a lens of discovery, the way she knows deep inside that she will amount to more than a woman who sits around and looks pretty.

The only reason for 4 stars is that the book wandered a little bit and there wasn't a strong plot going on, but it was still a fun and engaging read.

Content warnings: death, abuse of animals. Talk of dead during the flood. Maybe 1 or 2 very minor curse words.

Sigue siendo la historia que me hubiera gustado leer de chavala.

The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate picks up right where The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate leaves off. It is a wonderful continuation of the independent, spunky, charming girl, her family, and her world. This is an engaging novel full of secrets, revelations, and busting limitations.
