I struggled with his writing style and examples.

Something about the stories and characters fell flat on me and it was hard to continually engage. At one point, I even forgot that this was the book my men’s group was reading.

I liked the conclusion. It was convicting and clear and strong. The arguments and message of the book were good, but the pacing and slow build didn’t work for me. I felt like he was always on the verge of saying something good, but never quite finished the thought.

Really needed to process through this slowly. Scripture-saturated and truth-filled. Good read for the people pleaser in me.

Well I didn’t expect to finish this that quickly but what else are you going to do when sitting in a hospital room for 18 hours?
This book is fabulous! I expected to talk more about people pleasing but it just covered the general issue of fear of man vs fear of God. I especially liked the chapters that focus on codependency and what we truly need. It was helpful to have definitions of why we need people and what it means to love others.
Would highly recommend to every Christian!

“The sense of being exposed is an expression of the fear of man. It means that the opinions of other people — especially their possible opinion that you are a failure — are able to control you.”

This is a book that deals with an issue that we all struggle with: fear of man. Ed Welch offers biblical and practical help for everyone who faces it, whether as a major or minor issue.

Welch doesn't dress up the truth! At times what he was saying was a hard pill to swallow (and felt almost brutal!), but it was very helpful stuff and grounded in truth rather than what his audience might want to hear. In particular, chapter 9 "Know Your Real Needs" had many of these moments as it strongly went against the modern, Western cultural grain and challenged the idea that we have psychological needs at all. This is a helpful book for those who struggle with under-confidence or over-confidence (in other words, anyone).

The book's quality was compromised, however, by its lack of defining terms and development of thought. Welch's handling of scripture often frustratingly included interpretive jumps and unsubstantiated claims. However, I appreciated the fact that he clearly aimed to base his argument on the Bible as it was present throughout the whole book.

NB: interesting content on what it means to be in the image of God
