Although I live in DC and watch cable news regularly, I do not regularly read this type of book. And yet I found Cheney’s account compelling. Even after having watched the Jan 6 commission testimony, certainly says something about the state of our democracy that logic and morals have no place in the Republican Party. Which I realize is a polarizing statement, yet there’s clear evidence to back it up. If Dick Cheney of all people can teach his daughter to stand up for morality and justice and the spirit - hell our actual Constitution- THAT is saying something. I am proud that Liz had her own constitution to speak truth to power.

While Liz Cheney and I are from opposite ends of the political spectrum, I do respect her for standing up to her party and for standing up to the Trump machine. Thank you Ms Cheney for your insights and for your honesty, and for sharing your story with the world.

This is not a memoir. It's a journalistic political expose. Cheney is unafraid to name names and reveal details, and her warnings about the consequences of Jan. 6 are prescient. This is an important timeline of events as Liz Cheney experienced them from the inside and as an investigator, but could also come across as somewhat dry and didactic. It's a tough but important read that remains frighteningly relevant as of 2024.

73: Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning by Liz Cheney

I am most a sucker for an audiobook that is narrated by the author him/herself, and this is definitely a book that is even better that way.

Whether or not you are a fan of Liz Cheney or the larger Cheney family (including former VP, her father, Dick), a person cannot dismiss the facts of all she shares here. Nor can one dismiss how smart and well-schooled in government and politics Cheney is, how grounded in American history and its leadership, its voices.

It is not at all an "enjoyable" story she tells or an enjoyable "read" in the way that many books are. But this is an important book to read or listen to...for anyone, maybe everyone.

informative reflective medium-paced

Liz Cheney is what I would consider, now, a true American patriot. She has stood up to, and against, a former President who incited an insurrection against the United States government, from within. Though she previously had supported DJT along political lines, she now is doing everything within her power to ensure he never holds elected office again.

Cheney and I more than likely do not agree on probably anything politically, but her integrity is extremely admirable, and her willingness to defend the bedrock of our nation’s freedom, knowing that it is equivalent to “political suicide”, makes her a badass in my opinion. Standing for something greater than oneself is something I greatly respect.

The book goes through the events, conversations, and planning before, during, and after the January 6 insurrection. In great detail, Cheney describes all the information that was found by the January 6 committee as they laid out their case to the American people.

There is still a large percentage of our population that wants to believe the lies that were told about the 2020 election while we are heading into the 2024 election. I hope that people will listen to/read this book and it will help create a clear, unarguable, truthful basis for how people vote and support candidates going forward. As Cheney states, our democracy is fragile, and we must do everything within our power to protect it.

Worth reading even if (or because) you disagree with her politics.
