The Julian Chapter

So first of all I actually bought it, started reading and finished the book in 4 hours or less.

When I read Wonder I kind of missed Julian's POV. I really liked this book even if it is short I think I don't need anything else about Julian.
The book is divided in two parts: the first one about the year August came to the Beecher Prep and the second part about the summer.

Julian is the one who bullies August and the one that doesn't understand what he's doing. This story is original because usually we don't read about the bully and his/her struggles.
The book (as I expected) teaches a lot of things like there's an answer to why he is a bully, he suffers from anxiety (but he doesn't really know) and because of August his world has changed negatively.

SpoilerMy favorite part is the one when Julian realize what he was doing to August thanks to his grandmother. That chapter where everything changes: Julian understands and his mother takes a step back.

“The things you did, you know they were not right. But that does not mean you are not capable of doing right. It only means that you chose to do wrong.

Everybody makes mistakes. And it's so easy for us to judge, to say "I wouldn't have said that, I wouldn't have done that."
But let's be honest: how many of us can be certain that they wouldn't have done what Julian did? It's a terrible thing to say, but it's the truth: we are so afraid of what we don't know. What Julian did was terrible, cruel even, but we'd be putting ourselves on a pedestal if we said "I wouldn't have thought that."

What a treat to discover a new chapter in the story of Wonder! It was easy to dislike Julian (and his parents) in the original book. This new chapter fills out the characters more and the story as a whole is better for it.

Sometimes it's good to start over.
A fresh start gives us a chance to reflect on the past, weigh the things we've done, and apply what we've learned from those things to the future. If we don't examine the past, we don't learn from it.

If you read Wonder and loved it, then this book is absolutely a must-read. You really, definitely, absolutely should read this chapter. It is the cherry on the sundae. It is the sparkle on the dress. It is the star on the Christmas tree. What a beautiful book.

If you have not yet read Wonder, you are missing out on something amazing!!! I think this should be a mandatory read for young students. The premiss is "always chose to be kind". This is an emotional story of bullying, differences, and all from a child's point of view.
You laugh, you cry, you get angry...
It's also a great read for parents. Teach your kids kindness and stop making excuses for them.

A great short story written in Julian's perspective. The Grandmother's part almost made me cry.

Excellent read!

A good sequel to Wonder which shows the bully's perspective. You should read this if you liked Wonder to find out what happened after Julian left. It brings some closure.

Good context for the story, but probably should have just included the after portion for the most part after wonder...
