Ich bin mir nicht sicher was ich über das Buch denke. Trocken-deskriptiv im Stil (mit zu viel und unfokussiertem Foreshadowing), repetitiv im Inhalt und doch hat es mich in seinen Bann gezogen. Es zeigt die Natur sehr realistisch als eine wunderschöne und trotzdem brutale und am Leiden der Kreaturen desinteressierte Struktur. Die Zivilisation hingegen kommt aber auch nicht außerordentlich gut weg. Man verbleibt mit einem Gefühl der Trostlosigkeit wie in einer solchen Welt ein gutes Leben zu organisieren ist. Lediglich die Tiere sind ein Hoffnungsschimmer. Aber auch die Bindung an sie birgt die Gefahr für zu viel Verlust-Schmerz. Es ist mir fast unmöglich nicht die Assoziation zwischen weiblich, mütterlich und erschaffend sowie männlich, väterlich und zerstörend zu haben. Die namenlose Protagonistin möchte nicht töten, ist aber manchmal um für ihre Tiere sorgen zu können darauf angewiesen. Es wird auch deutlich wie schnell und einfach das (männlich) Töten ist wohingegen das (weibliche) Erschaffen kräftezehrend und langwierig ist. Das Buch wirkt daher manchmal fast wie eine öko-feministische Version von Walden. Ich hatte nicht das Gefühl, dass dabei ein Antagonismus zwischen den bösen Männern und den guten Frauen aufgemacht wird, sondern eher, dass in jedem von uns in unterschiedlichen Verhältnissen etwas weibliches und männliches steckt, denn sowohl die namenlose Protagonistin verändert sich in ihren Anteilen im Verlaufe des Berichts, als auch werden die beiden relevantesten männlichen Personen höchst unterschiedlich dargestellt und bewertet. Es fällt mir schwer etwas aus diesem Buch mitzunehmen. Im Moment habe ich den Eindruck, dass es mich nicht mehr lange beschäftigen wird, aber vielleicht denke ich mit einigem Abstand auch anders.

Jeg elsker jo simpelthen alt der bare lugter postapokalyptisk, og jeg blev selvfølgelig ikke skuffet af ‘Væggen’. Men den er meget langsom. Og der er ingen kapitler. Og derfor følte jeg nogle gange, at jeg måtte tage mig sammen til at sætte mig ned og læse i bogen. Men det er også den eneste kritik herfra. Fantastisk bog.

This book was very fascinating, but I can't really decide what I really think. In some ways, it was beautifully written, had very nice reflections, and I really loved the characters relationship to nature and animals. At the same time I feel like it was missing something, and could have had the potential to create a bigger impact than it did. Would still recommend.

The main character in The Wall, through total isolation from other human beings, clearly perceives the human condition, perhaps the first time in her life. Throughout the book she describes her many realizations about human nature. This is my favorite: "but we're condemned to chase after a meaning that cannot exist. I don't know whether I will ever come to terms with that knowledge... I pity animals and I pity people, because they're thrown into this life without being consulted. Maybe humans are more deserving of pity because they have just enough intelligence to resist the natural course of things." I cannot express with words how deep my appreciation for this book goes. It is a true masterpiece work of art that made me instantly want to reread it upon finishing it. I could come back to it one hundred times and learn something new each time.

Another beautiful story where not a whole lot happens. It’s the kind of book where you don’t get any answers as to why the thing happened, because that’s not the point. Rather, it’s understanding how a character exists and creates purpose throughout the thing that happened and how it is interpreted from the inside.
I am once again reminded that women are the ones who will choose to live with the ecosystem they’re put into, and have no choice but to find resilience when man tries to take it away.
I will never forget the way this book made me feel.
