DNF. China needs an editor wit ha spine to tell him when he's overwritten. The simple act of going to the grocery store to get some fruit takes up 4 pages, because he has to describe every single thing. I'm sure other people would find his endless descriptions of the grotesqueries fascinating. I got the idea pretty quick (Everything is grotesque), and didn't need to be beat over the head with it.

Why aren't I describing the plot? Because I only made it to page 100 and there didn't really seem to be much plot by that point.

how do i wrap up my thoughts on this book.. Perdido Street Station introduced me to the world of weird fantasy and sci-fi. had no idea what i would get into when i first picked it up, and turned out to be a real treat. it was a book which was very rich on storytelling and had an excellent world-building. particularly loved the questions it raised, especially at the end. the entire vibe of the book, horror-y and just plain weird but good, was really well written and played out. the entire plot of the book was incredible; and it almost felt like each chapter could be detailed and having their own little spinoffs. overall, there is nothing quite like this world Miéville created, of steam punk slums and mythological creatures.

I just couldn’t get into it. The little bit I listened to gave my nightmares.

Captivating. An absolutely sublime method of world revelation. Some authors spoon feed you the details of the world through info-dumps or long descriptions. Not Miéville. You see the world through the character's eyes, and if it isn't something they would have thought to comment on, then they don't. The details of the world are casually and naturally concealed from the reader until suddenly you're like,
Spoilerholy shit, wait, she's a fucking insect!?
. It's rare to read a world so artfully revealed (Handmaid's Tale comes to mind) and it is always a pleasure.

The fantasy world itself was quite interesting, and hardly derivative. I think if the book failed anywhere it would be plot, which was maybe a little drawn out and cheesy? This is definitely the sort of thing I would recommend to the right reader.
