'Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day' by Seanan McGuire is a kind of whodunnit ghost story, with a different premise than I've seen before.

Jenna is still hanging around, but she's no longer living. She is upset over her sister Patty's death, and blames herself. She blames herself for her own death too. In this book, people who die sometime have a debt of time they have to work off. Jenna can do this by taking time from the living, but she chooses not to do that and instead works at a suicide hotline. The problem is that something is making the other ghosts around Jenna disappear, and Jenna may be the only thing that can stop it.

I liked this world and the main character. The vibe of the book is a bit sad and melancholy, but I liked that with this book. Jenna has a pretty sad existence and a lot of guilt to get rid of. She doesn't let this stop her, and that makes her a pretty strong character.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Macmillan-Tor/Forge and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

I love this author and I think this is a really interesting exploration. It's more atmospheric than some of her other work, it reminded me a little bit of Neil Gaiman. It's short, almost a novella.

Jenna is a WV ghost living in NYC. She is "earning" her dying day by working at a suicide prevention hotline, saving lives when she can. She is trying to keep to herself, but events in NYC's ghostly community force her to act.

It seems to me that this is a self-contained story. I'm not sure if it's going to be a series—at least not with these characters.

This little novella was a good idea that seemed to be half baked and written in haste. It's more like an outline for a story or series and jumps around with too many ideas that don't flow well or stick together. There were several plot lines that were just thrown together and the author couldn't pick just one to focus on. It left the story disjointed. There was also a lot of explanations that instead of clarifying the world the characters inhabit just confuse the reader. Last the reader must suspend belief in reality because the author tries to write the story as if where taking place in the modern day but there is no way that would work for the MC's life or lack there of to exist without major changes to society. (A shit ton of ghosts hang around an area for decades and never age and no one notices, the same thing with witches). No real world building.

The story is a bit depressing (lots of mention of suicide and the taking of life) and very very repetitive (we read repeatedly about the MCs sisters death and witches are bad and again her sister's early death). However the characters are interesting even if they show no development and aren't fully fleshed out. The pacing was effective for the length, but again it was really more of an outline for a longer story or series.

Oof, her writing is always so beautiful. I used to shy away from novellas because I didn't feel like they had depth, but all of Seanan McGuire's books definitely have depth. This book felt like it packed in 400 pages worth into its 182 pages. Loved it.
