The romance in this story was somehow too slow and also not enough of a slow burn for me. I feel like there are glimpses of relationship growth -- or at least mutual respect and fondness -- early on that I kept wishing for the characters to reflect back to or dig deeper into, but they didn't. But I'm very much a mood reader so perhaps I just picked the wrong book. There is a power dynamic between Silhara and Martise that seemed to be ignored and it would have been nice to dig into a little. The magic and gods were interesting, but I struggled to understand exactly what was going on sometimes and wish there was a bit more world building.

It's a good romance in a fantasy world. It's not super plot heavy and it's nice to have dual pov. It's an interesting romance within an interesting world. The FMC is very submissive and the MMC is rough but kind. Enjoyed the read

Very meh. The romantic relationship between the two was lacking. Man was a huge selfish, asshole and never really redeemed himself. The “love” between the two seemed very one sided.

The plot and world itself was interesting but left me wanting more.

The inexplicable way this book reminds me of Howl's Moving Castle and gets me entangled in the mess that is Silhara and Martise.
Review (3.5/5) is purely based on my fragile emotions and a wave of familiarity and not a thorough thought process of whether this is actually a good book or not. I'm also enclined to wonder if perhaps gritty fantasy romance is the niche book genre that makes me irrational.

This was my first book by Grace Draven, and it will not be my last! It's atmospheric and passionate, elegantly written and helmed by two characters who could not be more different. I was quickly swept off my feet by it and am eager for more!

The story follows Martise and Silhara, a servant and a powerful avatar forced to live together when she is tasked with discovering his secrets. Martise is easy to relate to and is such a humanizing character. She is kind, patient, and utterly selfless. Not a warrior, but strong in her own right, I just wanted her to be happy and protected. Silhara is dark, crass, and powerful. He has a great backstory and an immense ability to change and be loved. I really enjoyed his progression as he opened himself up to Martise and found a new lease on life.

The world building and cast never get overwhelming, as Draven prefers to focus on the romantic leads. That said, there creatures and lore that are offered make for some exciting action scenes. The pace is expertly set, and everything moves smoothly to the well-fitting climax. And the romantic scenes? Let me just say that this book has some of the hottest make out sessions I've ever read in a book.

A breathtaking, dark fantasy romance with evil gods, broody men, emotionally strong females, and excitement, MASTER OF CROWS is a must have for all lovers of fantasy romance.
