Read this so I could discuss my son's summer reading assignment with him. Fantastic!
Eli's billionaire dad is obsessed with nuclear war, so he builds this huge state of the art, underground compound. While on vacation, Eli's dad recieves information that a nuclear bomb is headed their way so he takes his family to the compound--forgetting that his mother-in-law and son (Eli's twin) are still at the cabin. After 6 years of life in the compound, Eli begins to realize that things don't really add up and maybe his dad wasn't truthful about the bomb.
Far-fetched but a suspenseful read.

This was a bit disturbing and quite suspenseful. The plot was very creative, but a few sections of the writing were a bit confusing or vague and I had to reread.
This was a fairly good book with a well written plot that was original and kept me on edge wondering what would happen next. Wish it was longer, though.
Eli has lived in the Compound for six years now. His billionaire/genius father built the Compound as a safe haven for his family in the event of a nuclear war. The old world, the family likes to refer to, no longer exists. And neither do Eli’s twin brother, Eddy, and his grandmother, which is Eli’s fault. After six years the food is depleting rapidly and so is the family’s demeanor. Eli’s father sporadic behavior and secrets are also becoming a concern. Eli begins to discover things that simply don’t add up. The Compound that was built to keep them safe, may be no more than a prison in which the family can’t escape.
Yet another great book for 2008! This book was suspenseful, thrilling and completely captivating! I initially did have some skepticism, I mean how much can one person do when they are stuck underground?? Could it really be that entertaining? But I love it when authors prove me wrong and this is one of those books. The storyline was awesome! I sat down to read it, and I could not put it down. I recommend you grab your own copy of The Compound on April 29th!

Want a quick read that doesn't make a lot of sense in places but definitely creates a menacing feeling? Like surly teenagers who have to come to terms with their mistakes and end up redeemed and heroic? Are mysteries your favorite reads? The Compound might be for you.
Billionaire Rex Yanakakis hurries his family - most of them, anyway - to a secret underground bunker as nuclear war is only moments away. The lavish compound is meant to be self-sustainable for the next fifteen years. Six years into their "stay", life is as normal for the Yanakakis family as can be expected. But things are not quite right. Rex is acting strangely, and Eli, Therese (his sister), and Clea (his mom)are suddenly suspicious.
Contaminated flour. Dead livestock. Real Monets. The Supplements. Wifi on, wifi off. Cake CD. Turducken. Nesting dolls.
Random? Yes. Power hungry? Yes. Quick pacing? Yes. To read? Maybe.

TBCD.
The reader was a little annoying...
Kind of a cool concept - a Bill Gates-style Seattle billionaire creates the mother of all bunkers for his family in the case of a nuclear war. Six years into the 15 year quarantine, the 14 year old son starts to ask a few questions about their existence.
I thought the narrator was a little too cleanly flawed-then-redeemed, and I never really connected with the other characters. There were definitely times when I anticipated eurekas well before the characters, so that was annoying. But it was a good action story, touching on difficult topics (cannabalism, villainy, blame/shame, cloning). Would be an easy sell for a booktalk.

I just felt like this book was rushed -- not very well thought out? Or maybe that it was too well thought out. In any case, I found it fairly predictable and unbelievable. The character of the father is just so....unjustifiably crazy. I felt like it was missing something. I would, however, recommend it to young readers as a page-turner that would keep them reading and craving to find out what happens next.
