i liked the fact that mason was reworking myths, but not how he chose to do it.

what compelled me most as this came to a close was the notion of community. there was too much repetition of some of the visuals (in the sense that it tired me to read about the waves on the shore from the lonely island/castle/etc. over and over), but this was also nice in the sense that all the characters really do seem to live in the same world together. I don’t know another book that has a sense of community like that, and so I appreciated it. it would be a perfect book if it had been shorter or longer, but I think the length of it is a little unsatisfying to me for the stories that it covers.

Like The Lost Books of the Odyssey: thought provoking, sad, well written.

it is so real in the acknowledgments for Mason to write that Ovid truly just feels like a man and that we simply must regret his trouble and thank him. this felt like a book that saw Ovid as a wanderer, one who could not rest, one writing the same thing over and over, a prophet interned to prophecy forever without any hope of an ending. idk this book makes me think about The Work. how the mythology of the wandering obsessive writer is infinitely more real than the solitary one locked away.

A really interesting collection of respun Greek myths. The standout stories for me were the ones that add deeper meaning to the basic story, like Athena. Others were misses, and I had to force myself to maintain attention; the writing is poetic and a bit showy, which works if you're onboard but did little to draw me in to stories I wasn't already enjoying.
