’The game’ 45 år före Kristus, dvs ganska underhållande. Också knappt någon skillnad mot hur sådana här raggnings/ligg-böcker skrivs idag, samma tips och upplägg ungefär.

These translations by Rolfe Humphries are more serviceable than eloquent; however, that seems to be almost universally the case with translations of Latin lyric poetry. (But not, for some reason, Greek poetry, and not for epic poetry.) The tongue-in-cheek humor of many of the Amores (short love poems) and especially of the Ars Amatoria - The Art of Love, the lengthy poem billed as a jokey manual for romantic relationships from which this volume takes its title - are apparent, but probably a lot funnier if one can read the original Latin. While these works do not achieve the poetic heights that Ovid would reach in his middle and late career, it was interesting to see a different side of his writing from what he shows in The Metamorphoses, and to see the small glimmers of his storytelling ability that he would perfect in his great epic poem. A fun read, but not a must-read.

Hilarious. Suprised that this instructive elegy series about how to secure a lover was written in 2 A.D. You will get a strong sense of a society that was very similar to that of our own. Also proof that men’s misogynistic ways have not significantly improved since then; they just became more subtle about it

This was actually much more interesting than I would've expected. Most know Ovid from the famous Metamorphoses but coming across this, I didn't expect it to be anywhere near what it actually was. We have a little bit of humour laced into this book in which the Roman poet believes that sexual love can be taught. Think like... Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide but for the late Romans... and for sex. This is, in my opinion, directed at men to teach them how to catch and keep a woman. This is NOT what a woman wants. Ladies, do not expect good things from this LOL.
But it was interesting. It's cool to see what their game was back then versus what it is now. Some of this would NOT fly right now or for the past two decades in all honesty. It's a little barbaric tbh.
So it breaks it down. Step one, you gotta find yourself a lady. Ovid lays out the best places to be for this and gives you a little bit of technique for each place. Step two, you have to catch her by any means necessary. One of which is to basically suck up to her maid to get into the good books.

no rating bc sexist and also because i’m so very much not an ancient greek classics reader and know absolutely nothing about the time period aside from what i learned in percy jackson books when i was twelve. i read this side by side with how to be a poet by jm farkas to get the full picture of the book, not just the 105 pages that we get in htbap.

Об Овидии вам лучше рассказали бы поэты. Но я не поэтесса. Было мне временами мучительно, временами нудно, временами нравилось. Продолжаю читать книги с курса по исторической литературе Виргинского университета, восполняю пробелы. Сейчас дочитала «Науку Любви». Что интересно, нравы, требования к мужчинам и женщинам, к их поведению в процессе «игр» мало чем изменились. Написано две тысячи лет назад, а всё то же самое, что и сейчас. Свежо и актуально. В этом гений.

У меня, честно, ум за разум заходит, когда я пытаюсь осознать, как давно это написано, как давно живут эти стихи, и что буквально каждая строчка и совет, в принципе, до сих пор применимы.) Такое впечатление, что время застыло, или Овидий и его творения не подчиняются никаким законам. Это будоражит. Читала под плейлист «Музыка Древнего Рима», и у меня в голове местами происходило настолько реалистичное путешествие в ту эпоху, как будто я сама там жила. Ощущения экстремальные, я вам скажу.)

Теперь понимаю всех тех, кто сходит с ума по Древнему Риму и Древней Греции. Это отдельный сорт удовольствия.

ps В фильме Стэнли Кубрика «С широко закрытыми глазами» есть сцена, где буквально по кадрам воспроизведён этот стих Овидия:

Très intéressant, mais pas nécessairement un "page turner" (j'ai passé vite sur les références mythologiques, disons). C'était un heureux mélange de conseils pertinents très actuels, de conseils louches et de conseils louches soulevant des questions très actuelles (p. ex. sur le consentement)!
Dans la section portant sur les moyens de se remettre d'une rupture, la lectrice précédente (mon exemplaire est usagé) avait pris des notes assez comiques dans la marge... ça ne faisait qu'ajouter au charme de la chose! Globalement, j'ai aimé!
