Little Stranger by Leigh Rivers

This was absolutely atrocious on all accounts, from the writing to the plot to the characters to the plot actually having to make sense to the relationships. This is trash and it has set women's rights 100 years back.

Well, I don’t know what that says about me, but I had way too much fun with this book. It was dark, unhinged, and taboo. Not only that, it was my first truly enjoyable reading experience with primal play. I’ve read a few books featuring it before, but this one just hit different.

The erratic nature of Malachia paired with Olivia’s softness created a great opposites-attract dynamic. Plus, Olivia had a devious, curious side that was absolutely filthy. The spice was forbidden and addicting.

This book does contain a lot of triggering content, so be mindful if you decide to pick it up. Overall, it was a quick, spicy, dark read — and I’m so glad I gave it a chance!

Look, I went into this not expecting a lot and I was still disappointed. Like, people love Malachi but idk, I just don't get it. I swear to god when he
couldnt say Olivia but he could sing the Itsy Bitsy Spider and say "waterspout"
I laughed.
I've read plenty of messed up stuff, but this was written like it was taken straight from Wattpad without an editor. It's just 200 pages of boring writing with some shock factor by what Malachi does to Olivia.

ALSO the dad was the only half decent character in this book. Def not perfect, but he tried. Mom legit
sold off her adopted daughter's virginity at 16 and continuously tried to marry Olivia off for her own monetary gain even a decade later.

‘Please choose me. Nobody ever chooses me.‘ - Leigh Rivers 🥺

⭐️⭐️💫 2.5 Stars

I’m trying not to be too harsh because I know this is a well loved duology. I mean, I flew through it in 2 sittings so it was an easy read. Lots of dark romance tropes to tick off the list I guess? 🤷🏻‍♀️
But…both characters were insufferable, I felt nothing between them. Every scene felt like it was trying to be shocking for the sake of it - which fell flat. And regardless of the fact they’re ‘foster’ siblings…it’s a hell no. 😷
It’s a shame because I just finished ‘Insatiable’ by the same author and it’s SO much better. Like, I can’t believe they’re the same person. 👀

Olivia Vize is a very flat and apathetic character and my disdain for her grew more and more as I read through her POV. There was no character development on her part and the only redeeming quality of this novel comes from Malachi when we're finally introduced to his POV. There was light, depth and emotion in Malachi's world. I was able to explore his mind and feel something. Something that Olivia never gave us. Her POV was very limited and very restricted in contrast to Malachi's, but I understand the literary element the author was trying to implement, if that's what she was aiming for. Even though Malachi had a host of issues, he was a lovable character and you could feel his yearning and longing to be loved.

The only two characters that showed any semblance of character development were the MMC and the father. Everyone else was a walking cliche. Olivia is selfish and lacks a backbone.

The writing was boring (Olivia's POV), cliche and repetitive in some areas. I really wish authors knew how to use a thesaurus or use more descriptive imagery. The second novel won't be worth a read.

Let’s state the obvious, this book is dark, taboo and definitely not for everybody. It’s just not and that’s okay.

🚨 This review may contain light spoilers, so read at your own risk 🚨

That being said, let’s get cracking with a review, shall we?

Will I ever look the same at screwdrivers? No.

From the get go Olivia and Malachi couldn’t be more different when it comes to superficial looks and likings. Where she’s all fluffy unicorns and rainbows, he’s all gloomy, dark mystery and sadness. Where he listens to Bad Omens, she listens to Taylor Swift. She’s a cheerleader loving to doll up, he likes his crunge look and combat boots.

The pet spider could’ve been crushed for all I cared, I had chills just reading about it (I really hate spiders, every and any kind or size…it’s a big fat no for me). Although, I did have a laugh when Malachi made his newest little pet crawl onto Olivia.
In turns of events, finding out why he has such a fascination with these fluffy monsters is actually heartbreaking, it’s always been his way of coping with repetitive traumatic events that had happened early on in his life.

I didn’t like the parents, they both had such flaws and shortcomings. How would they ever be allowed to foster children? With their father being a raging alcoholic (who sobers up later in the book) and who physically abused(at least insinuated) his adoptive son. Along with a manipulative mother figure who seems to get off on guilt tripping her daughter into scenarios she doesn’t even want to be a part of to begin with. I loved reading that, with mostly the help of her father, she was able to rebel and get out of the arrangements set up by her mother. Breaking free from the shackles that she’s been chained to for so long.

It definitely felt like we were taking by the hand while he spiraled in his quest for revenge. Especially since prison didn’t do Malachi any favors at all, only adding to his obsession of Olivia and what he deems rightfully his. I could sense his bitterness mollifying into self-blaming and melting further into his desperation for needing Olivia in his life. Being angry about her depriving him of her presence for 8 years.

Malachi is willing to work on himself to better himself for Olivia. Going to therapy, seeing a speech therapist. He has an odd way of showing her, but I liked the growth in him where he was like ‘fine, I’ll make peace with whatever choice you make.’

“loving me the way I always wanted to be loved.” - that’s was definitely a phrase where the realization of feeling misunderstood, lonely and deprived from any form of affection for years was felt. As it is so relatable and this broke my heart a little, because Malachi never truly felt home anywhere like he did in the presence of Olivia.

The ending of this book got me worked up and angry, because it took a turn for the worst. I don’t think Olivia should’ve walked out the way she did, especially not after begging, pleading, telling and wishing for Malachi to come back to her.

Overall I enjoyed this dark black book where dubious choices were made and characters tried to redeem themselves into becoming better people for others.
