This book was so completely unexpected. Please do not consider it a sequel to Graceling... in the hallowed vein of Lois Lowry's The Giver, The Messenger, and Gathering Blue, Fire is a companion novel to Graceling. And what a companion it is! Set in a parallel world, at a time that (we think) is very shortly before Graceling, Fire follows the story of another young female protagonist, also with very special gifts that isolate her from the world at large and from those she loves.

Please don't take my comparison to Lois Lowry to mean that is was perfect. In fact, there were some parts that were so similar to the Graceling plot (yes, we know you love the troubled young man who seemingly can't stand to look at you) that I was a trifle bored. But Cashore can create a world that entraps you in its beauty and ecccentricities, and this alone makes Fire a worthwhile read.

Overall - 4 stars.

I generally liked the plot line of this book. I liked Fire, and Brigan, as well as a bunch of other characters. But, as the book went on, I felt like this book was just everyone having sex with everyone. And it was referenced to as a big thing. It just happened and you heard about it later. Also, a big discovery at the end about two main characters wasn't even technically true.
Spoiler Archer and Brigan aren't brothers. Brigan's parents are Roen and Brocker. Archer's parents are Jod and Aliss. Therefore, not brothers.
Other than those, I liked he book well enough, and could sort of see how it led into [b:Graceling|3236307|Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1)|Kristin Cashore|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1331548394s/3236307.jpg|3270810], and now I will have to read [b:Bitterblue|12680907|Bitterblue (Graceling Realm, #3)|Kristin Cashore|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1331532273s/12680907.jpg|6508730] to see how they all fit together.

If possible, I liked this book better than the first, Graceling. Beautifully written, slightly sad and definitely haunting.

high 4.5

when i originally read graceling this was the only other book in the series and i read the excerpt and straight up did not care bc it was not more graceling stuff so i never read it until now . HUGE MISTAKE

was honestly just as good if not slightly better than graceling. i do think it was a little slow to start, but its basically a 2nd book 1 for the series; there was a Lot it had to set up and explain. all of the reveals at the end never felt forced and i was honestly Super surprised at one particular thing but i shan't say here cause i dont want to put a spoiler on this review.

the graceling realm continues to be a pleasent change from other YA for me with how i actually enjoy the main pairings as well, and also its like. just generally WAY darker than other YA and not to a detriment. the continued discussions of feminist topics also is interesting and i actually find it really well done, i admit ive not delved into a lot of YA stuff but these books handle a lot of things very maturely and in a way i think many other authors could not

The kingdom of the Dells is very fun and interesting and im sad i slept on it for so long. i hope it makes a return in some way in the following books. Bitterblue is my only other reread for this series so im looking forward to where else this series will go

Lidt mærkelig i starten, men man vænner sig til det efterhånden. Skal helt sikkert også læses på engelsk

My Goodreads friends seem to be divided about whether they preferred Fire or Graceling, and I am in the group that enjoyed Fire more. A lot of that comes down to personal taste. Graceling was more of an adventure fantasy story, whereas Fire had more court intrigue and politics, which I prefer. The story isn't without its flaws, but I enjoyed it. A solid four star read for me.
