Beautiful book! A new favorite of mine, and one I'll love sharing with my children.
The tale on a young trombonist told with rich watercolor illustrations.
Solid biography that shows how a love of music can grow, the illustrations really capture the music
This is an interesting, well-told story with fantastic illustrations, and factual information at the end about Troy Andrews and his trombone playing as he grew up in New Orleans.
Read this because it's a Caldecott runner up. I was not looking forward to it. But I loved it! What an inspirational story AND a biography which will have all kinds of fun tie-ins and music for kids.
I super love this book! I especially love it because I was a child who used to bang on pots and pans to play music.

Trombone Shorty (2015) is an autobiographical picture book by Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews and illustrated by Bryon Collier. It is a great book for lower elementary age kids. Trombone Shorty tells the tale of how he grew up immersed in the music of New Orleans. He got his first trombone at a young age and made music with his friends all the time, which inspired and led up to his career as a professional musician and bandleader.
This inspirational book could be used in the classroom in activities that help students identify main ideas and key details in a story. It is also just a wonderful biographical book to help students learn about a current influential figure.

Read the book and loved it, and currently luxuriating in the audiobook version.
This is a cool, true story of a kid growing up in New Orleans, inspired by the music around him. I like that it really sounds like a kid's voice telling the story, and it's not too pretentious. The illustrations are cool, with some photo collage mixed in. I also think kids would enjoy seeing the real pictures of the author as a young boy with his trombone, and even on stage with Bo Diddley. I feel like you'd have to have the right kind of kid to really enjoy this book, maybe someone really into music? This would be a great read for this year's TDSRC theme - indulge your passions. 4+
