Dick's best novel of the 1950s by a long way indeed. This was penned whilst Dick was in the middle of writing a bunch of truly awful non-genre mainstream novels in a bid for literary respectability - the vast majority of which never saw publication in his lifetime - but whilst those novels are trash, this one is inspired largely because it borrows some of the techniques he was developing in them and applies them to a science fiction scenario. The end result is superb. Full review: https://fakegeekboy.wordpress.com/2013/10/20/dick-out-of-joint/

Excellent PKD book. All the altered reality stuff is there but without having to invoke drugs. Clever story. Goes a bit too quick in the end - PKD is eager to wrap everything up (although not cleanly of course)
Theres a steady drumbeat of unreality starting from the picturesque 1950's reality. It felt quite authentic or at least simulated :P
Vic seems to be un-vic in the end - PKD is too eager to use him as a foil.
So much time is invested in Junie but she seems forgotten in the last 20%.
Not perfect, but then again no PKD book I've read is, but some great ideas, some cool futuring and some good character development.

This one took me a bit to get into. Around the 80-90 page mark but once I was able to get into it, I really enjoyed it particularly the twist at the end. I'm a sucker for a it's actually the FUTURE .
I'm not sure if I can totally buy into the source of the main twist at the end but I still thought it was enjoyable. It was written in 1959 and it's pure Philip K. Dick with the "is this actual reality? should I trust what I see before me?" He's at his best when it turns into a paranoid thriller like this one is.
