Because it is a standalone it misses some of the larger plot elements that made the first law trilogy so good, but it is still an enjoyable read nevertheless.

Amazing book. And I did t really like the first first law trilogy but this book was so good. A great group of unique characters with various motives. And unlike the first trilogy a strong plot.
Abercrombie returns to the world of the First Law for a fantasy revenge story stand-alone!
I loved Abercrombie's "First Law" trilogy, so I was glad to see he returned to the same world for a series of stand-alone stories. This one was a fantasy version of a revenge story comparable to Kill Bill or something similar. Monzcarro and her brother were mercenaries (rather like Renaissance condottieri), but Duke Orso of Talins (who is a minor character in the First Law series) fears their popularity with his people, so he has them murdered . . . Or so he tries. But Monzcarro survived and puts together a crew to help her seek revenge on the 7 men directly involved in her brother's death and her attempted murder). The crew includes a some minor characters from the First Law series, and other such characters get cameos, but this really is a stand-alone story, and it is FUN!

I really enjoyed Abercrombie's 'The First Law' series, and it is nice to pick up a story taking place in the same setting. Abercrombie's writing style is definitely dark. I loved the way some of the secondary characters (from the First Law series) have come to life on their own in this book. Nothing like a bit of dark revenge.
DNF 35%. I got about a third of the way through before I had to put this down permanently.
The summary for this book intrigued me because it seemed like the kind of twisty-turny plot you get with a lot of murder mysteries, only this time the main characters was the victim and lo! She survived. There were some elements I liked (there's a poisoning plot at some point in the first third that was rather clever) but it got WAY depressing. Abercrombie paints a very seedy, disillusioned fantasy world, which may work for some folks but is 100% not the reason I read fantasy.

Fantastic.
Although I think Mr. Abercrombie could have reduced a bit
from the whole book, it was a very nice experience again.
A mix of Kill Bill and a RPG group with a lot of rogues.
