Don't Overthink It: Make Easier Decisions, Stop Second-Guessing, and Bring More Joy to Your Life

I was lucky enough to receive my ARC in person at the Modern Mrs. Darcy Book Club Reading Retreat last September. Where I actually said, "I don't really think I'm much of an over thinker, so this should be interesting." Oh, sweet deluded Kari. You were so very wrong. You do overthink.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Anne provides real life examples of how overthinking impacts daily life. She uses everyday situations that were easy for me to identify with. On more than one occasion I said "Oh- that's totally me. Yep - I do that." But beyond simply identifying how over analysis can suck the joy out of my life, she provided simple, applicable solutions to help improve it.
I read this book a couple of weeks ago and I find myself going back to it on a nearly daily basis. It is full of highlights and marginalia which is a rarity for me. It's a refreshing guide that helps affirm that while overthinking may be natural, the inevitable stress that comes with it doesn't have to be.
There are some incredible pre-release bonuses available at modernmrsdarcy.com I encourage you to pre-order this one. For you and the other overthinkers in your life.

I am so glad I got my hands on this ARC that was written for my life. I even took notes like it was a textbook. Even if you identify as a non-over thinker, there are some great lessons in here.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. While reading, it led me to discover overthinking practices I hadn't even realized I was doing. Each new chapter led me to nodding my head like "yep, I do that too!" The practical tips are easy to follow and don't require a whole new way of life but small changes that have the potential to make a large impact on your life. This book was a work book club pick and I'm excited to share it with more people. To buying the four dollar bouquet!
Reading this book while the world is living through a major crisis is indeed a interesting time. I’m someone who always thinks of what could happen in the worst case scenario of any situation. This is most definitely a book I’m keeping close to me so that I can dig into it again and again for the great nuggets of reflection on how to move beyond the worry and frustration of overthinking in any given situation.
2.5? Don’t completely regret reading, but nothing new and took a long time for a chapter where more than just a single sentence resonated with me.
Ch. 5
The straightest path to efficiency is reduction.
Ch. 6
Sometimes I only pretend I don’t know what to do, because I don’t want to do it.
Whether the issue is big or small, if we don’t like the answer we may be tempted to keep searching for a better one even if a better answer isn’t going to arrive.
Ch. 11
Rituals help us practice mindfulness. While we can mindlessly follow a routine we cannot do the same with a ritual. A ritual unites the rhythm of routine with focused attention…when we deliberately slow our bodies, we slow our minds, as well. What we’re thinking about during ritual isn’t important, what’s important is all the things we’re not thinking about…we’ll wander a lot less [throughout the day] if we establish the right direction. The right morning ritual encourages us to approach our day with intention…we will conclude that time feeling calm, centered, and ready to take on the day with the big picture in mind…we won’t feel rushed or harried, we’ll be present. When we don’t intentionally set our focus, our minds wander wherever they want…
Rituals help us reset. As our minds inevitably wander throughout the day, our rituals can gently nudge our thoughts back to where they belong. (2 pm midday break—15 min)…This brief indulgence provided a sense of balance and control even if my day so far had felt unbalanced and out of control. (Then look at to-do list and reset priorities before getting back to work)…I got to start over at 2pm by hitting reset.
Ch. 13 I waste precious minutes debating the inconsequential, talking myself out of things I know will bring me joy, things that wouldn’t hurt to say yes to, because though the cost is low, the pleasure is great…this kind of thinking is a lose lose proposition.

This was a quick, easy read. I bought it because I'm a fan of the author, Anne Bogel's, podcast, What Should I Read Next? This book is a little misnamed because it's not only for people who are over-thinkers. I think Anne tries to tie everything back to overthinking in her discussion of other issues that many of us deal with in our lives, and I think it's a stretch in some cases. But that doesn't mean the book isn't helpful. In fact, I think it's great that it deals with more than overthinking. It's broader than that. There are strategies and tips for asking for help, not over-scheduling and leaving room for spontaneity and relaxation in your everyday life, and creating better habits. It's a quick read, not very deep, and could provide everyone a few nuggets to think about.
This book took me a while to get through. It’s filled with a lot of good nuggets, but some of the suggestions felt unrealistic to working people with kids, especially around building in margin.
This book was so useful! I can be a chronic over thinker (aren’t many of us?) and the tips and strategies in this book have helped already. One night, during the time I was reading this book, I was sound asleep. At 1230 am loud construction woke me up. I would normally get mad and stew over it (like I could somehow control it) but instead, I got up, used the bathroom and promptly put in my ear plugs. I was back asleep within minutes. I love that this book provides me this tips like this that are actually effective. You aren’t going to want to miss this book!
I really like Anne's newest offering! It's full of practical, easy to apply strategies for dealing with decision-fatigue and analysis paralysis.
I enjoy her succinct style. She gets to the point and doesn't include 15 examples when one or two will suffice. And yet she remains warm and engaging throughout the book. I'm sure I will revisit this one.
