Solidly the worst Agatha Christie book I’ve read. Normally you get pretty solid bread crumbs. Way less so in this one.

Miss Marple goes to Bertram’s hotel to rekindle earlier memories. A vicar goes missing. A young girl is asking questions about her inheritance.

This was my first Ms. Marple story and even through I liked the mystery and the way it was build up I don't think that Ms. Marple was the one to unveil the mystery. She seemed more like a supportive character.

Any Agatha Chritie book is a wolrd of it's own and even the smallest detail can change the plot, I really like how the hotel and the small mysteries were planned out until the big reveal in the end.

An old-fashioned London Hotel is not quite as reputable as it makes out!

When Miss Marple comes up from the country for a holiday in London, she finds what she's looking for at Bertram's: traditional décor and impeccable service. But she senses an unmistakable atmosphere of danger behind the highly polished veneer. Not even Miss Marple can foresee the violent chain of events set in motion when an eccentric guest makes his way to the airport one day late!

I thoroughly enjoyed this Miss Marple mystery. The lovely little details about her London holiday, her village home and village neighbours just added to the easy flow of the story. The characters are so well described and so believable and the plot was intricate enough to satisfy.

I read all the Agatha Christie books when I was a teenager and was always a huge Marple fan (although I never really liked Poirot) and I'm so glad I've rediscovered them.

Normally the twists and turns of Agatha Christie are devious and delightful, but that was not the case with this. The murder doesn’t happen until 2/3 of the way through the book and it turns out wasn’t even relevant to the first 150 pages?? There is a massive disconnect between the vague and never really defined “web of crime” and “theft” that is the focus of the first part and the actual murder that takes place in the hotel. I was already confused by this when I got to the last five pages where we end with an incredibly unsatisfying end to the most interesting character’s arc and an overall moral of “kids these days are the worst” with a special dash of “bold young women who have sex are evil”.

I just?? What happened, Agatha?? Like I get that the 1960s were rough but writing this wasn’t the answer.

I’m giving this two stars because some of the characters were fun and I enjoyed the vibe of Miss Marple on her nephew funded vacation.

I was with this book...I was with this book...I was...what?

Mind you, the cat had decided to play fetch so I kept reading a page, tossing a mouse, reading a page, tossing a mouse. It's possible I missed something, but I don't think I did.

I LOVE the set up for this book. I'm a huge fan of Miss Marple. It felt as thought about a hundred story threads were started, but the ending knot was a bit messy.

“It’s a hotel for people who have read Cranford and Henry James.”
