I had to stop listening or reading at some parts because of just how IMPACTFUL the subject matter was. I cannot fathom ever going through the things Beah went through, but I am glad he was able to share his story with the world. It blows my mind that people have gone through and still suffer through these cruel and horrendous events. No child should EVER have to endure that.

"One man carried his dead son. He thought the boy was still alive. The father was covered with his son’s blood, and as he ran he kept saying, “I will get you to the hospital, my boy, and everything will be fine.” Perhaps it was necessary that he cling to false hopes, since they kept him running away from harm."
I liked this book very much and I only wish it was longer. The only way it was lacking for me was the speedy clip the narration maintained - I want more of everything. More before the war, more during, more after. As it is, I am intensely grateful for this account of a war I have never studied until now. The story is presented with a disconcerting baldness, as if it was not only lived by a child but written by one too. I think that was a good choice. The tone was consistent and reminded me throughout of his youth and incomprehension at the devastation in his life - even when I as the reader have a wikipedia article open with all the context I could want. I look forward to reading anything else he wants to write.

This novel was honest, well written, and intriguing. Beah's story tells of his stolen childhood, the events he witnessed, and his time as a boy solider. The most compelling part of the story, I believe, is Beah's brutal honesty. His use of short and blunt sentences, along with his truthful telling of his actions complete the picture.
This book gives the perfect example of a war-torn country and how it affects the lives of millions. I would recommend this books for anyone, especially students, because of the effect it had on me, has a student living in America.

I can not even comment on the accounts of what people and children had to endure in Sierra Leone. I need time to process the crimes against humanity highlighted in this book :'(
Such a beautiful account of a terrible ordeal.
Whilst hugely graphic in places, seeing everything through a boy soldier's eyes made it all seem more innocent, and so much worse.
Definitely a great read.
