Fuuuuuuuuuuck.

This one's worth our time. It tracks a courageous journalist who persistently rediscovers how to seek and promote truth through the evolution of misinformation that elected Philippines' dictator, Duterte. It also shows the culpability of Facebook in creating said polarization (ie: let's get off the Meta!). As Trump follows in Duterte's footsteps (as well as other dictators), this will be an important read for all who seek the good, beautiful, and true in the next years.

I struggled with the structure of this book, the time line leaps around to different topics and flashbacks. I have to agree with the reviewer who said it would have been better written by someone else, as a biography. As an autobiography and given Maria Ressa's achievements, it can at times subjectively read as egotistical. I do not think Maria Ressa is like that at all, it's just the occasional tone of the book due it being written in the first person. I also find myself with little room to move on the points I may disagree on. On the positive side, I think Maria Ressa is very dedicated to her cause, she is an inspiration. A brilliant champion of human rights and democracy. Maria backs up her words with plenty of resources and data, definitely challenging some of the dominant, populist narratives of our time.

The story of Maria Ressa, a Filipino American journalist, bent on reporting the truth despite efforts by Duterte's regime to undermine her and factual reporting. Makes a valid point about social media undermining our faith in facts, but unclear how we will move forward in this new news environment.

I had heard about Maria Ressa intermittently on the news, but was unfamiliar with her background or the details of her legal battles. An incredible personal story about her and her career - but in the end, it is a stark warning about the dangers of disinformation and the ways in which it fuels authoritarian governments.

Maria Ressa has led an amazing life. Her story of her fight against the corruption is inspiring. Journalism is both a fulfilling and heart breaking profession that is being threatened by those in power and it is up to us to hold those in power accountable.
