After the death of Kitty Talbot’s father she discovered how much debt he had left her with. The eldest of four sisters it falls to her to take care of them. The local squire, with whom she is all but engaged, ends the understanding. She must marry for money, and fast. There’s only one option, a London season.

Kitty is, for a large chunk of the book, an unlikable character. She’s manipulative and shallow, out for herself. I didn’t particularly like her and found it made the book less enjoyable. The romance is okay, not particularly strong, I wasn’t really rooting for them. Overall an okay book.

During the first 100 pages of this book, I felt sure that I'd end up disliking it, or at least feeling very lukewarm towards it by the end. But after those first 100 pages the book turned round and surprised me.

There's nothing groundbreaking here, but it's a fun, light-hearted regency romance if you go in with relatively low expectations. There's no spice, and it takes a long while for the romance to get started, really, so it's an extremely light romance. But by the end I was rooting for the main characters to get together, so there's that.

The characters themselves felt very undeveloped at first. Kitty is defined by her purpose: to go to London to meet a rich man to marry. The others also have their roles and don't really stray outside those roles for much of the book.

The plot, too, is somewhat predictable, borrowing from other well-known authors. I think a lot of ideas might have been borrowed, or at least inspired by Jane Austen, right down to the scandalous elopement towards the end and Lord Radcliffe riding to the rescue.

But if you take this book at face value and don't expect too much, you might find yourself enjoying it. Some of the banter between Kitty and Lord Radcliffe is fun, and I did warm up to Kitty by the end of the book.

Overall, I'm not mad about giving into the hype with this one, and might consider reading more from this author in the future.

I seldom read Regency romances apart from Georgette Heyer but was tempted by this one and wasn’t disappointed. It is great good fun with a very spirited heroine and attractive hero. The financially parlous position that Kitty and her sisters had been left in meant that her relentless pursuit of a rich husband was very much a necessity and highlighted how vulnerable to economic hardship women were during the Regency period. This leant a slightly darker edge to the general lightness of the novel. A fun read.

Felt like it dragged on too long in the middle but the ending was fun.

Ihanan dialogivoittoinen tarina. Tykkäsin paljon pääparin kemiasta. Ajankuva jäi ehkä vähän ohueksi ja suomennos hämmensi paikoin.
