Unfortunately now this book is a little dated for me- describing famous climbers from 1950s-1980s is a little underwhelming. From this book, I learned I am far more interested in the logistics of climbing expeditions (where do they get the money for flights, extreme cold weather gear, tents, bivouacs, and climbing gear?), than in the history of climbers conquering famous summits. Last 2 essays were the best essays.

A collection of magazine pieces and essays about ice climbing, mountaineering, and the people who brave these dangerous adventures. I’ve been meaning to read this for ages so very much enjoyed dipping in and out of this over the last few weeks. I’m now a Krakauer completist! He’s absolutely one of my favorite nonfiction authors.

Readable snippets on climbing and its characters.

So freaking good

This is Jon Krakauer's collection of essays from his mountaineering adventures, including the Eiger North Wall in the Alps, Denali in Alaska, and K2 in the Karakoram.  He writes very compellingly of the dangers of the mountains, including frostbite, crevasses, avalanches, etc.
