This was a wild ride of emotions. The book hardly let you catch your breath before the next was snatched before you could exhale.

buried my gays

I found myself getting into this second book way faster than the first one, thankfully and enjoyed the constant flow of action that kept the story moving. But...look...I still have problems.

Dear lord, how many times did Haven almost die? I lost count and it got annoying how many times she needed saving.
SpoilerAnd then she fucking died at the end and had to be brought back with the Wish, just...what the hell?
I get it. She's a mortal, she's human, she's not like the Solis or Noctis, but damn. It just got plain ridiculous. I admire her courage and her drive to keep going on despite having so many close calls, but it was really uncalled for.

My second complaint falls with the freaking romance in this book. I know it was implied Archeron had feelings for Haven in the end of the last book and even though I couldn't really see it, I was fine with it because he was in the denial stage. So I was figuring we would get some slow burn, or at least semi-slow burn between them where he struggled accepting his feelings towards her. In this book, that picks up literally right where the last one left off? He's all over Haven right from the start. He's suddenly in love with her. He accepts his feelings without any more denial or hesitance. Fawning over her. Touching her. Being gentle with her. Dare I say, he even acted a little out of character at times. And Haven! Ugh. She was all over the place with her feelings. At first, I had RESPECT for her because she didn't like or approve of the idea of hooking up with someone who was already married and had affections for his wife (he even said this himself--to HAVEN!). But that quickly switched to "well, I shouldn't be happy because Bell is miserable but yeah, Archeron's hot and has seen me naked" To finally "Archeron, me, want sex. Its tru wuv and I want every part of him."

I just...can't. I can't believe that Haven is okay with being the side woman. I can't. Because I know I wouldn't. And I can assure you that most other woman wouldn't. And I swear, I better not see any of that Solis BS of having "Two soul mates; one to help you become strong and one to teach you to love" for any future crap between this little love triangle I see. I will be so mad. Who says ONE soul mate can't do BOTH of those things?? Do not use this as an excuse to have Haven jump back and forth between Archeron and Stolas or so help me...

Also, while we're on relationships, what the hell was up with Bell and the Creature??
SpoilerThat kiss was out of nowhere and suddenly Renault was all "I've been wanting to kiss you for a while". I get the author may have been trying to go for a beauty&beast type of thing with them. But honestly? Their relationship never had chemistry to be seen as more than just allies. Maybe a blossoming friendship in the works. But romance? No. It felt forced if nothing else.

Le sighs. Okay, now onto my favorite scene in this book.

SpoilerRook's death scene. No, no, no, don't get me wrong. While I felt indifferent towards her in the first book -- mainly because she really didn't have much screen time upfront, similar to Bjorn -- she grew on me in this book. Her death scene was written beautifully:

Rook's sword flashed. She screamed--but it was a cry of rage, not fear. [...] Right before Rook disappeared beneath the leathery cloud of talons and teeth, and Haven began her free-fall to the river below, their eyes met. Something traveled between them.
A cry to arms--and a goodbye.
And then Haven screamed and screamed all the way to the icy water as her dying friend billowed across the sky.
A falling star; a true Morgani Princess.

It's so heartbreaking yet beautifully done. Just like Surai said, Rook died a warrior's death. She fought until the last second and holy crap, that scene is probably the most impactful one in this book because of how it was written.

I had a feeling Bjorn would be the one to betray them, especially with how distant he was acting in this book, but I wasn't expecting him to have been the one who sold Haven when she was a child. Which...by the way, why DID he sell her? I'm confused, because what we got in the first book seems to contradict what we're told here. Bjorn was supposed to keep haven and protect her so her power could grow for the Queen, but he sold her to what's-his-face and he clearly wasn't in with the plan. So...why did Bjorn sell her if he had a specific reason to KEEP her? I feel like I either missed something or it will be explained in a future book.

We finally got backstories and quite a bit in this book, which I loved! But they all felt to happen...too conveniently. Characters like Archeron and Stolas, telling their tragic or dark pasts so easily despite being tightlipped in the previous book.

And the girl is Stolas's sister! I love that. She seems to be a little hellion and I look forward to seeing more of her.

Fell flat

I dropped this book for about 6 months before coming back to finish it, and I honestly don't know if I wanna read the third one. The beginning was good, and then things just got...dull. The ending was super rushed and if Amazon didn't tell me, I wouldn't know there was a third book with the way things ended.
I'm not a fan of Archeron, and Haven just isn't interesting at the end of things. I think the premise of the whole thing was really interesting, but that this book just fell flat for me.

I am officially a huge fan of this series! The sequel is even more thrilling than its predecessor, packed with drama, action, twists, and intense moments, all created with beautiful and emotional prose. I cannot stop reading these books!

The story picks up right where it left off and kicks into the drama and action. The characters become closer and bond, especially Archeron and Haven. Their bond is a lot more romantic and swooning this time around, and I found myself wanting a connection to be built between them. Haven continues to react in her situations, yet I still sympathized and cheered for her, despite her stubbornness. Archeron's past is revealed and my heart broke for him. Bell's journey takes him to some amazing places, and my heart broke for him by the end. But Stolas... Stolas will always be my favourite. Complex, brooding, though a giant teddy bear inside, I adore him. I wish that certain side characters got more time in the spotlight, but am so happy with all that I learned!

The book is packed with twists, thrilling revelations, and betrayals that completely changed the situation. The intensity is through the roof and I can only hope for more in future books. I love the action, the creatures, and the lore. This is a complex world with a detailed magic system and such imagination from the author. Grey is clearly having just as much fun writing these books as we are reading them, and I for one am so grateful.

The epilogue promises more excitement, adventure, and character growth in the next books, and I cannot wait to dive into this world. It's been such a thrilling series, and I am ready for more!

DNF for 3 reasons.
1. A girl unlike any other girl trope. Everyone falls in love with her.
2. Both love interests are married men. Honey you are a main dish, not a side salad.
3. If Archeron cleans his finger nails one more time!

A wonderful sequel to the Kingdom of Runes series! It builds on the previous character relationships from the first book and expands them. There are moments that ripped my heart out and stomped on it, moments that made me cringe with embarrassment for Haven, intense betrayals, but we still find time to laugh in between! Couldn't be more excited for book 3!
