Found at the thrift store for 99 cents and quite liked it! A strong female lead who faces internal struggles and themes of letting go, letting other people be apart of you, making mistakes, and allowing yourself to love/be loved.

Overall liked this story. The first half was the strongest in my opinion, and it quickly lost me in the second half when Sybel was almost corrupted by Mithran and then quickly married Coren . It all seemed rushed and i couldn't figure out why she left everything behind so suddenly. I was close to putting the book away because I got so annoyed by how it turned into the typical storyline for a female protagonist. It was resolved, though, and i must say, I found that quite interesting :)
Shehad a plan and stuck to it, abandoning the morals she lived and breathed by for almost 30 years (if i calculated her age correctly) and let hatred and revenge consume her heart for jsut a little bit and thus got involved in the affairs of men - something she swore she'd never do but her love for Tam and her pain and pride changed in ways she didn't know until it was almost too late.
I especially want to note how interesting the dialogue was written. It took some getting used to at first BUT in the end it made the dialogue feel so realistic and accurate to how one would actually talk. The characters started sentences, stopped and started a new improved one, repeated parts of it, there were thinking pauses and everything. Very cool, haven't seen stuff like that yet. They still speak very clearly, sometimes in riddles and in the typical fantasy type of way, but the form in which it was written felt very unique.
The last chapter felt a little rushed as a conclusion but overall enjoyable :)
There's probably more things one could criticise but sometimes lifes more fun if you don't think too hard haha
Oh, I also want to note that i got this book from one of those "blind date with a book" things, because I never would've picked up this book with this cover at all (sorry) but now im glad i got to read it :)

Qué bien escrito está... Como un cuento, una fábula, una historia épica. Un libro de fantasía clásica que trata usa la magia para contar cosas profundamente humanas.

Siempre me han encantado las novelas de fantasía de corte clásico, aunque hay veces que llegan a tener cierta falta de originalidad. Nada más leer el primer capítulo supe que este no sería el caso, y cuando lo acabé de leer mi teoría se confirmó. Esta obra cuenta con todos los elementos típicos del género de la fantasía: magia, hechiceros, animales fantásticos,etc. Sin embargo, la historia da un armonisoso giro que consigue convertirla en una historia intimísta preciosa.
Por otro lado, creo que es importante recalcar que este libro se publicó en 1974 y aún así sigue siendo una historia actual. También hacer mención especial a la traducción (Rebeca Cardeñoso), pues ha sido original a la par que muy acertada y bellísima.
Nuestra protagonista, Sybel, es una poderosa hechicera que controla bestias mágicas y que vive aislada en la montaña de Eld. Para Sybel estos animales son amigos fieles, pero para el comun de los mortales no. Toda esta armonía se rompe cuando la joven tiene 16 años, pues un día cualquiera un joven aparece e su puerta con un bebé en brazos y le suplica que se encargue de él porque corre peligro. Durante 12 años la joven ve crecer al niño hasta que a este le es revelado que es hijo de un rey. El joven que lo protegió es un príncipe del reino enfrentado con el suyo, pero Sybel no quiere saber nada de guerras, odios y tejemanejes de los hombres, por lo que deja al niño marchar. A raíz de este suceso, todo cambia en el mundo de Sybel y arranca un viaje personal para ella sobre el que gira toda la historia y que se cierra de una manera totalmente inesperada y llena de reflexiones.
Todos los personajes acompañan perfectamente a la historia. Tienen sus luces y sombras, lo que les aporta realismo y evita que caigan en clichés. Sin embargo, si hay un personaje que brilla con luz propia (tanto para bien como para mal), esa es Sybel, su evolución a lo largo de la historia es magistral, cómo se muestran sus fortalezas y debilidades, sus actos, sus pensamientos...
La manera de narrar de la autora es lo que hace de esta lectura una experiencia mágica, consigue atrapar al lector desde el primer momento, tiene una estilo presiosísimo típico de los cuentos mágicos y leyendas. Esperando leer más de ella.

For a small novel, this book is packed with symbolism, emotion, and beautiful writing.
The Forgotten Beasts of Eld begins reading like a fairy tale story for children but also for a distinctly older audience to understand and appreciate the relationships and lore. Unfortunately, from the introduction and first chapter (16%) I do not find myself meshing with the characters, especially Sybel herself and how she conducts things. I am not the audience for this particular fantasy classic, but I recognize it is among other readers' favorites.
