This book was a 400 page Soap Opera. I didn’t especially care for this book.

It was a decent, quick, easy read with unexpected plot twists (that were sometimes disappointing). It started out strong - three siblings, quirky/loving Nora, dapper/handsome Leo, beautiful/polished Liberty - arrive at their aunt's funeral to reunite with their beautiful long lost cousin, Laila. The cousins are trying to figure out why their parents were estranged to the point of never telling them about each other, which could have been a great plot line to follow. Instead the book revolves around Laila's many attempts and failures to join the cousin's rich lives in NYC. Laila is a sad character who is impossible to root for, constantly disappointing her new family and the men she uses to social climb. The ending of the book was silly. Overall it was an OK beach read, but I would not compare this book to Gossip Girl or Gatsby, as many reviews did, particularly because there is only one likable character in the entire cast.

Goodness gracious what a dreadful group of people! The book was definitely entertaining, and pretty dark at the end, but I can honestly say that not a single character was likable. This is definitely what made the book what it was, and I recommend it as a beach read sort of novel (a little silly, really dramatic, etc.), but the characters were most certainly of the "love to hate" variety. Liberty was a foil to literally every single other character, which got tiring. I'm fairly sure Cameron was a sociopath, and everyone else was spoiled and irritating. Laila was the worst of all, but you knew that from the beginning. The only characters I somewhat liked were Cece and Reece, who caught on from the get-go what was happening and both seemed more down-to-earth. This is a good summer read overall-- nothing intellectual, but fun. Character development is really interesting, and the twist at the end was actually quite unexpected! Recommended!

In the upper crust of Manhattan wealth there is drama. The Lawrence family has money and lots of it. Laila is the estranged orphan cousin from the father’s side who shows up ready to start over. Coasting on the winds of bottomless cocktails and funds, she integrates herself into their midst. They give her a place to live, a closet full of luxury clothes, and access to billionaires and high society, but Laila learns quickly there is nothing to lie them to her. She must find her own way.
Time and time again she searches for belonging; in the arms of men and friends, searching for her angle wherever she goes. Each time she falls she gets back up, and despite a shifty undercurrent, I wanted to root for her. I wanted her to succeed. I wanted her to find love.
With a twist at the end, this book was the perfect distraction that I gobbled up in a short 2 days.

This book surprised me as I kept reading it. I expected a lighter tale and it dealt with heavier topics than expected as it went on. Towards the end, I had trouble putting it down as the layers kept peeling back. I rated it high because I couldn’t put it down, but I don’t know if I really liked the book. But the fact that it’s sticking with me beyond the final chapter is a sign it made an impression.
