First of all, this book is genius. I’ve liked other Nunez work and this really impressed me.
My mom died a long, slow, painful cancer death when I was 25. I was a new mother and wrapped up in my own issues, so I really wasn’t emotionally or physically present for most of her long decline. I won’t use the word regret but let’s just say if my mom were sick now and I was so many years older and wise I would do some things differently. All that to say, this account was an absolute gift to me and let me live out an alternate ending. I’m very grateful.

This was super reminiscent of "Writers and Lovers" by Lily King for its slice of life narrative and overall take-it-or-leave-it tone. This is very much one of those books that read as a stream of consciousness and I really, really enjoyed it. Our narrator recounts past conversations, interactions, and small moments that culminate into an overarching commentary on the variety of life experiences and human connection. There are some ethical queries, some notes on grief, some moments of humor, and I felt like all of it was done so well.

I liked the stream of conscience story telling - kind of like talking to an old friend.

I really liked this book all the way until the end. But the end seemed abrupt to me and that might have been intentional considering the subject. No answers here but a lot of good insight and questions.
