A retelling/reimagining of David's story from the Bible, we are introduced to twelve year old Aiden. He is the grandson of the area's first settlers and the youngest son of a great warrior. But his days are mostly filled with tending the sheep, until one crazy day! First he meets Dobro, a Feechiefolk, who Aiden wasn't even sure weren't mythical creatures to scare off young children. Then a Truthsayer arrives to proclaim Aiden will be the Wilderking of the prophecy. Unsure of how to process all of this, Aiden continues to live the life set before him with fun adventures and wondrous feats of bravery and faith!
This is the first in a trilogy and I'm excited to read more. Although it is based on David's story it is set in a fictional world that looks very similar to south Georgia with swamps and alligators! The Feechiefolk are a fun and lovable addition to the story and add a lot of goofy characters and scenarios! I would definitely recommend this to any boys (and girls) who like adventure stories! There's just the right amount of fun, peril, overcoming obstacles, and new discoveries to be made.

i had some trepidations about this one. i found it at the frugal muse and the cover was very appealing, so i bought it. upon closer inspection, it promised to be “biblical fiction” and i wondered if it were right for our public library setting. after reading it, the allusions to the story of king david are definitely there, but unless you’re really looking for them, you can read it just for the storyline and ignore the hidden messages. that being said, jonathan rogers is no c.s. lewis. the story seemed very pro-war to me (an instant turn-off for my pacifist self) and the dialogue was mediocre. there was nothing in the story that made me wish it would keep going. i savored nothing. i don’t know if i’m interested enough to even read the sequel which i’ve already purchased (again from frugal muse). i give it a “meh.”

3.5 stars. Fun read, but as a direct retelling of David and Goliath, my kids found it very predictable. We still enjoyed it enough. Unsure if we'll continue the series.

This was a fantastic book. It is a fictional retelling of the story of David being anointed King of Israel as a boy, fighting Goliath and defeating the Philistine army. It is the first book in a trilogy. My kids wanted me to keep reading chapter after chapter, even though they know the story of David, they couldn't wait to see what happened next in this fictional retelling. I highly highly recommend for kids are 8 up or as a family read aloud my youngest is 4 and loved it.

We loved this! In addition to a great adventure and fabulous vocabulary, it’s a fictionalization of King David and I’m sure the kids will remember this!

My family listened to this book on audio during a long car ride, and everyone—from the adults down to the 3-year-old—loved it. Great fun and beautiful messages: “Live the life that unfolds before you” and “love goodness more than you fear evil.” Plus, feechies! :)

Clearly based on the story of David from the Bible, this book fleshes out a decent medieval story. Shepherd boy kills a panther, ancient wise prophet says he is going to be a king, he kills a giant with a sling, saves the day, and is invited to be a companion for the prince. There are two more books in the series and I will probably read them, but not now.
Good story, I like the Feechiefolk, though I'm not sure what their parallel is in the Biblical version. The Bark of the Bog Owl is slightly mysterious, but I am pretty sure the bog owl doesn't exist. I liked the cave & gunpowder stories.
