We listened to the audiobook read by the author with our three boys. They loved it and we all laughed at loud when we first heard the bark of the big owl. Fun characters and wonderful story.

This book is a fun, fantasy tale loosely based on the story of David from the Old Testament. I read it aloud to my 9 yo and 6 yo, who always begged for one more chapter as I closed the book each night. Good balance of adventure and humor. Fun for all ages! Looking forward to book two.

I really enjoyed the biblical references in this book, as well as the surface story. We listened to the audible version and the narration by Jonathan Rogers was great.

Good book for kids. We listened to it as a family and I enjoyed it. It wasn’t the best story ever but it had good Christian themes and neat southern influences.

I love this fictional retelling of David's story through the eyes of Aidan. It's not a true textbook retelling; it's a fictional tale of another world with similar events and ideas. Super inspiring, easy to read, and well-written. I love reading about Dobro, the feechies, the brothers, prophet, and giant. It's a great reread, and I am sure I will read it again in the future.

"You will fight one day for Corenwald - and sooner than you think. You will fight because you love Corenwald, because you love the freedom to live and worship as you see fit, because you love your family and your fellow soldiers. But you must never fight because you love the battle. You must never love the battle."
"If I am defeated tomorrow, I want to die as I have lived - a shepherd boy, with the sun on my forehead and the breeze in my hair. But if I overcome, everyone must know that the One God, and not Aidan Errolson, is the Champion of Corenwald. Neither arms nor armor can deliver Corenwald - only the arm of the One God."

Very enjoyable imagining of the biblical story of David, which we read for our middle and Jr high girls' book club. The audio version was especially fun. We will be painting an alligator and/or a panther watercolor during club discussion, and/or making a calligraphy sign of several especially quotable bits, and/or making slingshots with the girls! :)

Was reading this to the kids but we somehow stopped doing readaloud time. They didn't enjoy it that much, but I thought it was okay. The writing was pretty good but the story is rather predictable and copies the David-Goliath story too closely. Nicely done with the medieval setting and the alligators though. Not sure how I feel about the feechiefolk vs the civilizers... :/

This was a little hard to grade - there were some 4 and 5 star partsto this book. But ultimately, I realize I'm not in love with it enough to bother seeing how the series ends up, which is telling.

A good book worth reading, but not a favorite.

The story of David and Goliath comes alive in a new setting in The Bark of the Bog Owl. Aidan Errolson’s sidekick Dobro Turtlebane may remind you a bit of Huckleberry Finn. But Aiden’s humble heroism will inspire readers young and old to “love goodness more than you fear evil.” I can't wait to finish this trilogy!
