way more preachy than I remember, but still a fun read. I love the premise - the life of David plus cannons and other innovations

I loved this book so much that I want to buy a copy of my own to read again, and to underline, and to marinate in its thoughts over and over. I loved the rich characters and the seamless storytelling. I loved the powerful messages that speak to loyalty, courage, integrity, and dignity. The only thing I didn’t love was the setting- I could not wrap my mind around a fantasy world that was so familiar and yet undefined in certain particulars like time. It wasn’t until the end of the book, when an opposing army uses gunpowder as an unfamiliar weapons technology, that I could fix the setting in my mind. (And I never realized how human innovation defines historical context until this moment.)

This was a fun family read-aloud. This is the first book of The Wilderking Trilogy by Jonathan Rogers. In the early part of the book, the biblical allusion to the story of David is pretty obvious. It doesn't take away from the story for it soon takes on a life of its own. We are introduced to the Feechiefolks and learn more of their story as the book unfolds. It includes a lot of action and twists and turns. I recommend it.

Retelling of David in a fantastic fantasy story.

My husband I really enjoyed this imaginative retelling of David and Goliath. The setting is very backwoodsy, and the author read the audible version. His southern accent and knowing exactly how he wanted all of the sounds and songs to sound made the audio version a hilarious delight. My husband and I were frequently laughing out loud over the antics of the characters. If you love Daniel Boone you you’ll love this series. We are looking forward to listening to the next 2 books in the series!

The best way to read this book is by listening to the audio version read by the author. Knowing exactly how a feechie call sounds just makes the book! We loved this story. We laughed, we fell in love with fictional friends, and saw so much Truth in the story. It is so much more than an adaptation/retelling of David and Goliath. It’s poignant and quirky and wonderful.
