Surprisingly fun read. And it's an interesting delve into the Life in the Paris of the 1830s. Balzacs Style certainly has Something!

Mini-series olarak çıksa tutabilecek bir eser gibi geldi.
Starts off slow and old-fashioned, but gets much better towards the end. I read it foremost because of Marx's praises, and it is an interesting snapshot of French society--obviously not a documentary, but illuminating nevertheless. Very dramatic and the title character reminded me of Dostoyevsky's the Idiot at times.
My original review of this, some time ago, seems to have disappeared. Suffice to say that I agree with most other reviewers of it as one of the finest novels of the nineteenth century - and ever.
A stunning potrait of love - but not the usual kind.
A stunning potrait of love - but not the usual kind.
Although set 200 years ago, Père Goriot is a hard-hitting portrait of a heartless society driven by money and superficial status. A student, Eugène de Rastignac, gains an education into the dark side of society through the goings-on in his run-down boarding house and entry into the lives of his rich aristocratic cousin and the wealthy daughters of Goriot, another resident in the boarding house. While the style is a little dated, it is lucidly translated by AJ Krailsheimer.

Every Balzac novel I read, I love as much or more than the last. Utterly superb.

this was fun!! i was not expecting it to because the first hundred pages drove me insaaaane. even though this book was for my class, i was thiiiiis close to dnf'ing and just reading the sparknotes version. i decided to give it one final chance, and quite literally ten pages later the plot picked up and i was hooked! now, it isn't for everyone: it is bloody long with way too many descriptions, the characters are all social commentaries, and things can get mighty confusing. but if you are willing to push through like i did, you will find a highly entertaining social commentary on Parisian life at the time!! i hope to revisit this once I'm out of school and can give it its proper due, but for now...this was fun!
