Dove right into this sequel as soon as I finished the first title. Extremely satisfactory continuation of the tale. Both books struck me with the feel of Foyle's War which also covers behind the scenes of WWII in England.
This was just as good as book 1! I finished this during my lunch break, it's now evening and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. What a storyteller Kimberly Brubaker Bradley is! I'm quite literally blown away! I now want to read every single thing she has ever written! (so many exclamation marks, I'll try to calm down)
Ada is such a great character: loveable but still imperfect. Her character's growth is absolutely amazing to read about. I adored being able to see the world through her eyes. I've, weirdly enough (or not), come to care about her and Jamie and Maggie and Ruth a lot.
There's something beautiful in being able to tell a story about children without hiding or erasing the hard parts of life.
I know for a fact that if I have children someday I'll make sure to recommend these novels to them.
(I only kinda wish we'd know what became of the characters once the war ended.)

Wow. I am so touched by this book I don't even know how to begin to explain. It was so complex and even though it was a war stroy it was so full of life. So cozy. Aida and Jamie are amazing children even though they've been through a lot. To hear their thoughts of the war, their childish thoughts so innocent, it really opens up a new perspective. I was almost in tears at some parts. But I enjoyed and truly loved every second of this book. I was never bored or tired of it. I definitely think that everyone should read this book and the first one as well. It brings joy and sorrow at the same time. It's something I can't begin to explain.

V sad, beautiful and knotty. These characters and world are so richly created.
Moderate: Grief
Loved this sequel! More thoughts to come soon!
I almost thought I wouldn't like this book at first because Ada's character agitated me to the point where I almost had to stop listening, but it ended up being just as (if not more) wonderful than the first.
Themes: Recovering from abuse, unconditional love, trust, emotional healing, kindness/compassion, the effects of war, courage/fear, death, religion, persecution, friendship, responsibility, coming of age, grief, horses/pets....I can go on and on.
The plot is well paced, never dull, and every character feels completely real with all of their flaws and gifts, and even I learned from the wisdom of the children and adults in this book (another theme--we never stop learning and growing).
I'd recommend this to ANYONE who enjoys children's literature, and it's especially perfect for middle school students--much to relatet to and much to learn. I couldn't have been any more captivated by the story, which of course means I cried, laughed, smiled, and gasped at times. What a perfect book.
P.S. The audiobook is EXCELLENT, and I don't know if I'd have loved it quite as much in print. That accent!

The sequel to one of my favorite books I read last year-- this book exceeded all expectations! It follows the life of Ada, a girl who, thanks to surgery and her guardian, finally receives treatment for her clubfoot and the ability to walk without limitations. This book specifically deals with Ada determining her place and responsibilities after her adoption and finding family in the most unlikely of places.
Set in World War II, it doesn't shy away from the pain that follows war on both sides and the battle that occurred on the home front in England. This book features a strong-willed main character who struggles to accept the love and help from her new family, and is wonderful for kids (of all ages) who identify with difficulty expressing emotions, those who enjoy historical books, or even just horse-lovers.
I really can't tell you all how much I love this series. It's a great, purposeful book for middle-school age kids that many would enjoy!
