Guanzon’s story between Alaric and Talasyn definitely had its highs and lows. While I ultimately had a good time with the two, and called the ‘secret princess’ reveal from a mile away , part of the fun I had with this story was that I’ve read enough fantasy/romance to know where this path lead.
While I understand the war time chapters were to give context to the relationship, I wish they were done more akin to a flashback rather than leaps forward in time. It felt like only once we arrived at the “4 months later mark” that the story actually began.
If you enjoy the Romantasy genre, this series is definitely for you! The enemies to lovers arc is strong with these two 😂

But a cavernous space had been hallowed out in her heart over the years, and his words echoed there beside older ones: that she wasn’t worth it; that she was too difficult for anyone to bother with. An orphan who was too mouthy. A solider with only one friend. A Lightweaver who could barely master the basics. A Lachis’ka who was too coarse-mannered. And now a bride who would never be loved.
You want a REAL enemies to lovers here it is. I’m talking there’s actually hate between them and they try to kill each other more than once. And the slow burn is intoxicating. Will they, won’t they? The push and pull of both of their emotions as they realize the feelings they have, especially the main character as she juggles her duty to her country vs her heart. The writing definitely includes a big vocabulary, it threw me off with how many big words there are but I got use to it. The characters and their interactions are definitely more of the focus point compared to the plot. Their chemistry is undeniable and I loved reading every second. It seems to me that most bad reviews picked this book up because of a fanfic the author made and seem disappointed with this as it fell short compared to said fanfic but as someone who had no idea about any of that I am glad I started this read without any prior knowledge as it allowed me to enjoy the book more without making comparisons. Overall, my first 5 star read and I can’t wait to read the next book!

I gave it 4.5 ⭐ it was great but not quite 5 ⭐ perfect. Idk if I got a different copy from these people that are calling it spicy or who ranked the sexual content as graphic or even moderate, but this had no sex. This book is pg-13 with maybe a half a 🌶️ They only fooled around once and not much more than what kids are sadly already doing at 13-14 years old.

Audiobook. I don’t usually listen to fiction audiobooks but I really enjoyed this one. I feel like listening to it helped me to become more immersed and engaged than if I had read a paper copy of it as there is quite a bit of world building to get used to. I felt the plot was pulling from some typical storylines but in a way that was unexpected to me, making it feel more of a fresh story and not just a copy or mirror of something similar. Some minor spice at the very end but it’s mostly the build-up of the pair since there is at least one more book. Considering getting the physical book because it’s a beautiful cover!

There was a big shift in tone about 30% of the way through the book which threw me for a loop. But once I adjusted, I had a good time. I'm a big fan of the author's writing, specifically the way she focuses on the unique understanding the two main characters had for one another. She also has a knack for painting pictures of the various settings with her words.
Yes, the romance was perhaps a little tropey, and there are many obstacles in their path, but it was also very sweet in certain moments. I'll definitely pick up the sequel to see what happens next, and will absolutely pick up more books from this author.

The Hurricane Wars was interesting. I enjoyed reading it and getting to know more about Talasyn, Alaric, and all of the other characters and story points, but I do have a few issues.
I thought this book was a YA novel due to the themes and how they are presented (and was going to recommend this to my YA Book club), but, after a bit of research and finishing the novel, I realized this was an Adult fantasy book. I feel the only reason this novel is listed as Adult is due to the (SPOILER) mild sex scene at the end of the book - which I felt we could’ve done without. The tension is there throughout the novel and I enjoyed it, but without the sex scene, this doesn’t feel like adult fantasy.
I mean this as a COMPLIMENT since sometimes adult fantasy takes itself too seriously and becomes hard to follow. This book wasn’t hard to follow at all, with each scene beautifully written and each phrase or article explained so no reader is confused. Guanzon has a wonderful way of describing all of her characters, settings, and actions and not leaving any detail missed, especially if it’s important.
I like Talasyn and Alaric and their petty, rivalry-driven banter and their thick tension, but I do find them both a little frustrating. Talasyn is horribly hypocritical about how “Vengeance isn’t Justice” and Alaric is too stubborn and attached to his father’s messaging to see the world around him in any other light besides war.
Speaking of the wars, for a novel titled “The Hurricane Wars,” we only witness the war proper for 2 chapters. I wish there had been more background SHOWN about the war and the loss and everything that has shaped our characters but we only get a glimpse at that destruction in 2 full chapters.
However, I was enthralled in the story and can’t wait to see where Talasyn and Alaric’s story, and the story of the Hurricane Wars, goes!

Interesting magic world that is in the midst of a war. Looking forward to seeing where the story goes. It is very slow burn.

I originally read this book as its fanfiction version: landscape with a blur of conquerers and let me tell you, 5 stars couldn't be enough to rate that masterpiece. I feel Thea rushed too much into creating this into her own original piece. Sometimes, you can still feel the Reylo comparisons, but it's in no way as romantic and steamy as the fanfiction was, which was a let down to me. However, this book was still a masterpiece in its own ways and I plan to continue reading the series to see where Thea takes the story. It's such a different world she's created that you don't find this in other romantasy books. It almost feels like Southeast Asia meets Star Wars meets Steampunk, and I love that about this.
