The subject matter is divergent to my usual read, but it was entirely necessary to read, especially given the time period in which I'm living. It is entirely relevant, and shockingly, not so shocking as some may presume it to be. George was the most sympathetic character I have ever read, and I feel personally attached to him. Isherwood's writing was so clear and he entirely understood human emotion better than most. I wasn't expecting to enjoy this novel as much as I did.

"If you and I are no different, what do we have to give to each other? How can we ever be friends?"
Just really beautiful writing. I love a "day in the life" story and George is one of the most well-formed characters I've read in the format, especially considering how short this book is. I'd been a bit apprehensive about reading this because I'd heard how heart-wrenching it is, but while it was absolutely very moving, I was glad that it wasn't maudlin - it was the opposite; it was full of humour and life. It reminded me of Mrs Dalloway and I loved it for a lot of the same reasons, but Isherwood's perspective and tone made me enjoy this book even more than Woolf's.

the last page alone was a masterpiece in itself. isherwood’s writing is so incredible
Oh my God......my heart is broken. I started the book not really that interested but about halfway through I was hooked on what George was doing and thinking during the day. And then the end had me at work with a couple of tears running down my face. What a beautiful book. Now, I need to see the movie asap.
