all of this review!
Part 1: I identified too heavily with Phoebe wanting to be normal and cutting off pieces of herself to fit in boxes of normal.  Understood her want to kill her self and the fantasy being constantly interrupted by reality.
Part 2: Love that she didn't kill herself because she needed to know more.  She needs a little dog!!!! Love the portrayal of Juice and the humanizing of the mom.  GLAD she didn't have and affair
Part 3: I'm really thankful that phoebe and Gary didn't have an affair.  Also, incredibly happy that she didn't end up back with Matt.  I am so happy to picture her in the winter mornings with Frank.

This is so close to a 5 star read for me. I teared up at many points as we got to experience the binding of stories, people, their collective healing, their flaws, and their assets.

It was such a beautiful look at what it means to be alive, to be human, to accept our own skin and live in it with grace and honesty and courage and love. I loved the journey of this book.

The only reason I cannot give it 5 stars is that I found some of the inner dialogue (and sometimes character dialogue as well) to be very crass in ways that weren’t necessary and sometimes felt borderline excessive. I was appreciative that the romance aspect was not the forefront of this story and as such there weren’t explicit scenes as much as explicitly sexual language.

Also left it a 4 star because I wanted a little bit more of a tidy conclusion about Phoebe and Gary’s future as a couple. I wanted more closure.

I really enjoyed this! Very existential (obviously) and at times perhaps a bit pretentious, but overall a great message to keep enduring even though life is hard and unpredictable.

And as a side note, I love a book taking place in New England, especially in Rhode Island, which was the start of my next chapter of life as well. Similarly, I’m going to Newport for a wedding this coming weekend, so the timing of reading this somehow aligned perfectly! (I did have to laugh about all these rich assholes coming from places like Cranston and Pawtucket…rich assholes do not live in The Bucket lmfao).

It is an interesting take on the risks and rewards of being your most authentic self
