The story became a little murky in the middle, or should I say the logic of the plot was less than logical. Still, the characters were warm and memorable, and they seemed to be getting along better. And yet there are some key players on the sidelines to lurk in the next episode.

After I read the first book in this series, I devoured almost everything else Lindsay had available on Amazon.

Amaranthe and her motley group are trying to get known for helping the Emperor but it's an uphill task. Books and Mal stumble across several dead bodies in the underground water system - one of whom has a strange trinket in his pocket which leads them to a new, very popular casino.

Soon Amaranthe is trying to find out who killed these people and why the residents of Stumps, including members of her own group, are falling ill.

This book is apparently all about Books - I would say it is another Emperor's Edge book in which we see Books' POV on occassion.

Anyway, loved it.

As with the first book in this series, "The Emperor's Edge," this book was a lot of fun and a great adventure. The narration really brings the characters to life and the author has done a wonderful job of making us care about them. I enjoy the world that Buroker has created and the conflicts, both inner and outer, that her characters must face. At the very high end of independently-published books--this is indie publishing done right. Highly recommended to fantasy fans!

I am in love with this series! I did some searching and have found that there are at least eight books which fills me with both wonder and dread (as if my TBR isn't long enough!) but I already have the first three so....

"Dark Currents" takes the mercenary group The Emperor's Edge to a secluded lake on the outskirts of Stumps. The team has gotten closer and more fit due to Sicarius' intense training and they are doing good in the hope's of getting the emperor's attention and getting exonerated. Akstyr is gaining control of his Science, Maldynado is still a womanizing but funny dandy and Books just wants to prove that he can be useful, especially since Amaranthe has done so much for him. The dynamic relationships is what pushes this from a story about solving mystery to a fun and intriguing adventure. We want the Edge to succeed even if every time they try to do right the enforcers try to shoot them on sight.
