A good, twisty psychological mystery. A baby's bones are dug up at a building site, and a reporter begins looking into finding out how it got there. Quickly, a possible mother turns up--a woman whose baby was snatched from the hospital 42 years earlier. Meanwhile, a woman with psychological problems who had lived in the area as a teen becomes convinced that this is her own baby. The twists and turns make for a satisfying mystery.
The 2010s will be remembered as books with a big reveal. This book tries really hard, but I had it figured out way before the reveal. It was still entertaining, though.
How did I not predict that ending?! I feel like I should have, but I definitely didn't even consider it. Which makes me like the story more. There were some lulls and slower moments in the book that I skimmed because I was losing interest, but I enjoyed the plot.
Sometimes it was a bit repetitive because the start to many chapters were just repeating the previous moment in another character's viewpoint. I think that's where I skimmed most, which I hate to do. Many of the side characters got very lost in the story. At times I felt like they'd become more important, but they were forgettable -- especially the husbands. This was definitely meant to be a female driven story (exemplified by the funeral scene at the end).
I love when I don't predict the twist though, so I have to give credit to Fiona Barton for writing a surprising resolution to the story.

Really enjoyed this book and author. Barton does a great job crafting stories that leave me thinking about them long after I'm done and discovering I liked the story mire than realized. I hope she doesn't pigeon hole herself into stories that make you think "what the f was that??" Because then it will just be waiting for that moment and figure out what that moment will be. Looking forward to more books!

C’mon.. I figured the plot out within the first 100 pages. How did the cops not know?
I literally only kept reading this book to prove I was correct in guessing what happened
