While there is no question that P. D. James is a good writer, she seems to spend more time examining the characters and situation than actually moving the story along. This is great if you are more interested in character development -- James' work is a perfect study of that -- but anyone who prefers the story to move along a bit quicker may wind up a bit bored. Certainly The Children of Men is a must read for those interested in dystopian futures -- just be aware that the story moves rather slowly.
Decent. Took a while to get into it. (Looking forward to the movie even though it'll be very different.) I have this thing lately of unknowingly reading books about horrible British governments in times of horrible strife and near apocalyptic upheaval: Brave New World, 1984, V for Vendetta and now - Children of Men.

Sucked big time.
Don't waste your time. It was dreadful
The movie was worse and yet totally different.

After seeing the film, I was interested in reading the book to see how different it was. There are several major changes in the film (which I will not divulge). I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
I liked the ending, but the book dragged. It took me far longer than I expected, and I never really felt like I was "in" the book.

A brilliant premise but I found it to be terribly executed. Pretty much nothing happens until two thirds of the way into the book, the characters and their motivations are very uncompelling. The relationship between Theo and Julian is completely random, he falls in love with the only woman to speak to him apart from his ex-wife?? Many plot holes and predictable story lines. I hope to enjoy the film more :(
For those of you who are thinking this is like the movie, it is not. Pieces come from here, but it is entirely different. I enjoyed both.
I'm currently researching how different authors look at the world in a dystopian way and I find this one very interesting. It's not a pandemic that kills 10,000's in a year, it's a slow death of a species. I like how she envisions how it might happen when a species is looking at it's demise, without hope. Plenty of species deal with this daily, why should humans be any different?
Yes, Theo is a bore, but that's the point, isn't it? How something so magical as a pregnancy can change someone who thought they'd never change?
