Very interesting dystopian world in this one. I liked thinking about the question of whether hope lies strongly on the backs of future generations, i.e. with no future generations expected, humanity loses all hope and desire. Especially desire. The descriptions of people's really really hum drum lives were excellent.

The only thing I didn't get were the groups of crazed last generation people - I never did understand why they had become that way, and why that generation was somehow a little genetically different, in a twisted way. But other than that, great book. I am looking forward to seeing the movie.

The book is nothing at all like the movie, what I can remember from watching it years ago. They share a premise and a beginning, but from what I recall, the movie is more of a thriller while the book focuses on the protagonist, his relationship with his cousin—the Warden of England, and his connection to a woman who seeks his help. The shifts between first-person POV (presented as diary entries) and third-person were distracting at first but provided both an intimate and broad view of a world without children.

It's hard to stop comparing it to the movie, especially as the movie is fantastic. Somber, sullen. Interesting, but never great.

How can there be dignity if we care so little for the dignity of others?

I liked the movie more, how often does that happen? But I appreciated both how singular the book was, and the excellent job done in adapting it. Sometimes a book is a great jumping off point; you don't have to follow the source material slavishly.

This was my first James but certainly not my last. I have to say, for this kind of book, I still prefer The Road. But I'm weird like that.
