a powerful account.i found the part where he discovered the true nature of the 'north', and how it showcased how societies could function well without slavery very compelling, in how it was the final instance that completely demonstrated to him that it was possible to uphold economic and social wellbeing without the support of slavery at the helm. douglass demonstrates the manifold ways in which dehumanization affects the oppressor and the oppressed, and the way people come to see such dehumanization as 'normal' in poignant detail.

Frederick Douglass’s note at the end of the book about religion and how people claiming Christianity and supporting slavery being completely different from ACTUAL Christianity from Jesus’s mouth was my favorite part, and I think it rings true still today, just in different contexts: migration, support for people who are a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, people living in poverty, just to name a few.

Douglas’s narratives gives a brutal account of the horrors faced during slavery which is not limited to whipping.
After President Trump rambled like an unprepared middle schooler giving an impromptu "What Black History Month Means To Me" speech last week, I joined in with the ridicule and laughed at all the Frederick Douglass is still alive memes ... until I realized that I didn't really have very deep knowledge of Frederick Douglass' life than basic timeline facts that could get me through Jeopardy. And my education never put this classic into my reading diet. So, in the spirit of rectifying the glaring blind spots in my reading history, the time was nigh to read this. Particularly powerful in a narrative filled with powerful moments is Douglass' account of learning to read and write, of which I'd been told about in the past and am glad to now have first-hand knowledge.
Amazing. I cannot do justice to how powerful this narrative is.
