The first book ended on such a cliffhanger I couldn't wait to start this one. I loved seeing how so many of my theories came true. It came to a nice conclusion but I still want more

This has been such a fun duology to read and I'm glad to say the enjoyability has been consitent throughout both books. Ana could be a frustrating character, at times -- how did she never learn from her mistakes enough to know that nothing good ever comes from her running off to do everything on her own? -- but the cast of characters overall is such a pleasure to experience. There's action, adventure, mystery, and really sweet moments of romance scattered throughout. I highly recommend this duology for anyone who enjoys their space travel with touches of humor and romance.

I had loved Heart of Iron, and I’m not sure what happened. Maybe my own tastes changed in the last year? It was a fast-paced adventure with fun characters. I love those kinds of stories.

In Soul of Stars, the stakes are higher, all life is in danger from “the Great Dark”. Poston attempts to keep the mood light though, and even running for their lives, characters are making jokes or sarcastic one-liners. It didn’t work for me. I struggled to love the same characters I loved in the first book, but much of the dialogue came off as forced. Not to mention the whole first half where A Character is nearly dying multiple times.

The “Great Dark” is a weak villain, not just in the sense that everything works easily for the characters, but it wasn’t interesting.

The first half of the book was almost a chore to read, and everything after that was hard to focus on. I still wanted to know what happened though, because there are characters I liked. Siege. Di. Otherwise I would have filed this under DNF.

Though the first book was better, I enjoyed this one too. Good ending (not great, but solid), fun twists and turns (though, one of them you see coming a mile away), and the characters are wonderful. It almost feels like this one was trying to compete with Heart of Iron, and tries to make itself better and just ends up being too much. You start to question the probability of these exact people, each having such a specific individual importance to the setting, ending up on the same ship.

And now that I’m thinking about it, there’s one bombshell that gets dropped that is never explained.

All that said though, I devoured this book, and had a fun time doing it.

I really enjoyed the storylines and all the POV’s. I still found the world building a bit confusing but everyone character development was lovely!
