This is totally a me thing. I love Dan Kois’ writing but this type of plot just doesn’t do it for me.

Super cute book with surprisingly poignant moments. Kois does a great job of anchoring the fantasy elements with the authenticity of the main characters and the reality of a group of middle school aged boys.

This was a fun time! Reminiscent of goosebumps; you never really think things won't work out, but you enjoy the thrill through the characters' feelings. I think the way race was handled was a little odd. It was overly simplistic, and I couldn't help but feel like Kois might not have been the best person to tell that story. He handles queerness better, and he mostly skirts around the first generation Indian-American perspective, so that doesn't stand out as much. But otherwise, this was a really fun read.
