This book... it felt comfortable. Kind of like watching a favorite TV show from when you were younger... but then realizing all of the hidden jokes and subplots.
The main plot twist... I didn’t see that at all. I’m more liable to think that I just wasn’t thinking, but in actuality I think Shusterman is a good author.
I don’t like all of the characters, but I like their growth and I like their purpose and the way they’re written. The world itself is well built, too.
I can’t wait to read the sequel.

Great read. A real unique way to look at the afterlife for children. Slightly morbid but in the best way.
I had read this book in middle school and had only vaguely remembered the premise and as I kept reading realized that I don't think I ever finished it. The concept of this book is pretty weird and probably not for everyone but I really enjoyed it. The last three chapters sold it for me and the cliffhangers have me on a hunt for the second book.
Not bad. More of a kids book than even a YA. Moved along pretty slowly. The last chapter had momentum though and it could have been a really good book if it were all written like that. Not sure I'll bother to read the sequel.
Good story. Got bored and distracted in the middle, but once I came back to this, it was an easy finish. Narrator was a little slow, so had to speed up narration to 1.20.
I loved this book! This is a very fun read. Much of what the world is like for Afterlights (people who have passed away, but haven't quite gotten where they were going) is unique. I especially love the dead spots - areas where Afterlights can exist without sinking through the ground. This book is definitely recommended!

The plot was fast driven but sometimes felt too fast. I think there was some beautiful writing about what it feels like to no longer exist/ forget yourself but there were themes such as grief and longing that were not explored as much as i felt the plot was eluding to
Solid young adult book. Very much for younger people. Slow start, but then kept my interest later on with fun characters and plot.
Simple book for new readers.

3.5 stars, rounded up. An enjoyable YA read that might have appealed to me a bit more if the characters were a little older (17-18 instead of 14-15). The world-building and adventurous plot were pretty great though.
This is my second Shusterman book and I will be adding him on my ever-expanding author list. Full of inventive surprises, Everlost was a quick read and felt both familiar and new. Shusterman effectively uses timeless tropes to weave a story that has mythic and common elements both. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I felt a comfort in the way this story was written. Familiarity is the closest word I have in terms of description - and I do not mean it disparagingly. Rather, his style is like putting on your favorite sweatshirt and pajama pants and curling up in bed with a favorite book. Comfortable (though not comforting) and good.
