Lovely!! What a cliffhanger tho bro

The great thing about fantasy graphic novels is that they can capture so much in their pictures without slowing down the story. Fun adventure that starts with a Girl (Bea) and a Galdurian (Cad) off to look for Bea's missing grandfather, but when things take a frightful turn, their newly found friendship, and companions met along the way, must endure. Feels v DnD/Seven Deadly Sins, pretty illustrations, and I'm always a sucker for a magic system/historical backstory that is just fleshed out enough to be believable and exciting, but not overly complex.

Yay, pls give me the next one in April thank

"Some things you can't think."

a well deserved 5 stars

I'm crying right now. This is one of the best children's books I have ever read.

Characters: 5/5

Plot: 4.5/5

Setting: 4/5

Writing: 5/5

Overall: 5/5

This book is so simple yet so elegant. The writing style lets us into the main character, Pip, thoughts but it does it in a beautiful and very subtle way.

Example:

"It's simple food," said Pip. "I only like simple foods."
Simple. Pimple. Dimple.
Sim-pull. Pim-pull. Dim-pull.

This book is one of the easiest five stars I have ever given. It's bright and clever and I fell in love with it. It's not a mystery book and it does have any huge plot twists but it is a wonderful story and one I hope to read again.

TW: Emotional abuse

FINISHED THIS AT 12:18 AM YESTERDAY BY THE LIGHT OF MY PINK FLASHLIGHT!!

I was gifted this book by my English teacher, and I immediately judged it as a basic middle grade fantasy. I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. It was actually kind of depressing. I did not expect that! The story was so touching, especially told in the voice of sweet 10 year old Pip. The writing was gorgeous. It just added to the beautiful heartbreaking sadness of the whole thing. It's like a more depressing, magical realism, beautiful writing twist on [b:Little Darlings|7821925|Little Darlings|Jacqueline Wilson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1320398257l/7821925._SX50_.jpg|10862248] by Jacqueline Wilson. I'm not usually a fan of magical realism, I find it a bit wishy washy and vague and weird. But in this book, it just clicked. It's also written by an Australian author and based off a real Australian town. I will definitely recommend this to people forever. It's so good!!

Also, Little Fella is so cute and just reminded me of the dragon from How to Train a Dragon.

10 pages in and I knew I was going to love this one. The gorgeous descriptions of the landscape, the use of metaphor and the building sense of both wonder and foreboding. This is a beautiful novel.

The story revolves around Pip, a 10 yo girl living in outback Queensland. Home life is difficult and she finds friendships hard too, particularly now her best friend Mika is no longer around. Suddenly, amidst these ordinary problems, something other-worldly occurs. Pip find a helpless baby dragon.

He needs almost constant care, so Pip begins to nurse him back to health, all the while trying to keep him secret from her family and the other kids at school. She wishes she could help her Mum with the problems at home too, but feels powerless and so just watches on in hope that things will change.

I loved this story. It was really easy to identify with Pip and all that she is feeling. The bond between her and her dragon is intense, and like Pip herself, we aren't sure what it will mean - even after finishing the book I'm not sure I understand :). Whether deliberate or not, Karen Foxlee brought to my mind the Pern series, as music and song is a special part of the connection with the dragon.

I think some readers in particular will fall in love with this story. I hope it gets read very widely.

This is a story about a girl who discovers a baby dragon, but it’s really about grief, bravery, friendship, and domestic abuse. It is beautifully written and evokes the landscape of Mt Isa and North Queensland so well. I love the tone, and how it deals with challenging topics in a sensitive way. Love love love this.
